Holstein-Friesians are the types of cows that people usually think of when you say ‘cow’.  Holsteins are the ones that have white and black spots.  Sometimes the Holsteins can be all white or all black.  There are also some that have red spots and a white coat, but that is because the gene for the red spot is recessive.

 

 

Holsteins are the largest cows of all the dairy cows in North America.  The weight of a mature Holstein is about 675kg (1500 lb).  They stand about 58 inches at the shoulder.

 

Holsteins came from northern Holland and Friesland.  They were imported to the United States during the 19th Century.  In Canada, Australia, South America, and South Africa, Holsteins are also raised a lot.
