Eleven Hutchinson DECA members competed at the DECA International Career Development Conference held in Orlando from April 26-29. Michael Bretches from Hutchinson High School placed 3^rd in Marketing Management Category. Mandi Adams, Jordan Cook, Luke Graham, Stephanie Sanders, Jeremy Stunkel and Katie Wille all placed in the top twenty percent of their categories. The other participants, who qualified at this year’s state competition, are Heather Gerstner, Matt Partridge, Erica Scofield and Tyler Sullivan.

Today 170,000 marketing students, 4,500 marketing teachers, and 14,000 postsecondary Delta Epsilon Chi members enjoy the benefits of membership in DECA, the association for students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship. Kent Blessing and David Patterson are the local chapter advisors. Hutchinson DECA has over forty members coming from the Marketing & Lodging Management Program at Hutchinson High School and the Reno Entrepreneurial Development Institute.

Competing with 26 other Kansas High Schools at the annual Kansas DECA Career Development Conference, March 2-4, 11 students from the Hutchinson DECA Chapter qualified for International Competition.

DECA, which is an association made up of high school students pursuing careers in Marketing, Management, Merchandising, Hospitality and Entrepreneurship, offers annual state and national competitions that give students the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Made up of 40 students from the Marketing & Lodging Management and Reno Entrepreneurial Development Institute (REDI), Hutchinson DECA took 27 kids to the 3-day state competition which was held at the Overland Park Marriott.

DECA offers a comprehensive program of competitive events based on the occupational goals of its student membership and on the activities of chapters in high schools. The overall purpose of DECA’s competitive events is to contribute to the development of skills necessary in Marketing, Merchandising, Management, Hospitality, and Entrepreneurship.

Competitive events are broken down into seven categories:

1. Individual Series Events (2-role plays, 1 test)

2. Management Team Decision Making Events (1 role play, 1 test)

3. Marketing Research Events (30-page plan, 1 presentation)

4. Chapter Team Events (30-page plan, 1 presentation)

5. Business Management & Entrepreneurship Event (9 or 20 page plan, 1 presentation)

6. Marketing Representative Event (1 presentation, 1 test)

7. Special Activities (Quiz Bowl, 7 Up Challenge and Virtual Business Challenge)
