Chapter Nine

"We are now arriving in New York, New York. Please fasten your seatbelts." The pilot announced. We toutched down and taxied to the terminal. Dane and I got off, and hailed a cab quickly, before some of the people around came out of shock of seeing Dane and I in the airport. We told the driver where we wanted to go.

A couple minutes later, we arrived at the hospital and got the information we'd needed to find my mom. I paused in front of her door and took a deep breath. Dane reached for my hand, and we went inside the room. The first look at my mother made my heart break. The left side of her face was all black and blue, her usually neat blond hair was matted all around her face. Her whole body was in a cast. She couldn't even move her fingers. A doctor came in and Dane gave my hand a supporting squeez.
"Are you her daughter?"
"Yes. I'm Lenora DeSoto and this is my friend and co-worker Dane Cotheran."
"Hello Lenora, Dane. Your mother is not consious. She's been in a coma since she was brought in. We don't know how much longer she will last. She's bleeding profously internally, and almost every bone was either broken or shattered, depending on which side you're talking about." My knees were gonna give any minute. I wavered a second, so Dane looped his arm through mine.
"What happened to her?" I asked softly.
"Car accident. The car that hit her- the driver died instantly. Other details, we don't know yet." I took a step forward to stand against the bed.
"I'll leave you alone now." The doctor left quietly.
"Mom. I don't know if you can hear me or not," I said gently. A tear slid down my left cheek. "But you have to listen anyway." Dane wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Mom, I love you." I layed a hand on hers. Her eyelids fluttered.
"Mom! You're awake!"
"Lenora." She whispered. I leaned closer. "Keep on going. I love you forever." She closed her eyes, and the constant, steady beeping of the machines went to one long beep. I looked frantically at the heart momotoring machine, and it wasn't following the heartbeats anymore.
"Mom! Wake up! Oh my god she's dead!" I screamed. The doctors came rushing in. Dane pulled me out of their way. After a few seconds of scrambling hands, the main doctor, the one that had talked to us earlier, turned to us again. "I'm sorry Lenora. She's gone." Dane instantly pulled me into his arms.
"Oh my god. She's dead." I sobbed onto his shoulder. "She's dead."
"Why don't you take her out into the hall." One of the doctors instructed Dane. He nodded and led me out to the hall. I cried until I ran out of tears. Dane held and rocked me until I pushed him away.
"Now what're yu gonna do? Your father- I don't know about him, you don't have any brothers or sisters I know of-"
"My mom was an olny child too, so she has no relatives. My dad- I don't know what happened to him, and no, I don't have any brothers or sisters you don't know of."
"How 'bout this. My parents and I'll arrange the funeral. You can stay at yur house."
"Thank you so much Dane."
"Anytime." The doctor opened the door and signaled for Dane to cover my face. He pulled me into his arms again while the doctors wheeled my mother's body out of the room. When it was all clear, Dane released me.
"I'll take you to my house."
"Okay." I followed Dane out of the hospital. We cought another cab and went out to Dane's house.
"Dane! You're home early! And Lenora! What a pleasant surprise." She smiled warmly, but her smile faded when she saw our expressions. "Oh no. Something happened. Lets go sit in the den." We all sat down. "So tell me what's wrong."
"Well, we have to make some funeral arrangements-" Dane started.
"For who?"
"My mother."
"Oh Lenora. I'm so sorry. May I ask how?"
"Car accident." Dane said for me, because I was crying again.
"How long ago?"
"Not even an hour." Dane wrapped his arms around me again.
"Does she have any family?"
"No. I think her mom had some money put away- maybe we can use that. She wants to continue living in her house." I got a hold of myself.
"Yes. Dane's right." I sniffed.
"Well then, we'll get started on it right away. Do yu want me to take you home now?"
"Yes please."
"Lets go then."
