Tajiri arrived in the WWF in the Spring of 2001. He approached Commissioner William Regal about being a Superstar, and Regal made Tajiri his personal servant in the hopes that he might start a career in the WWF. After a few weeks of serving Regal, Tajiri was granted a spot in the King of the Ring tournament. He qualified over Crash Holly, impressing Regal in the process. However, he did not succeed against Rhyno in the next round. He beat Tazz at Invasion, and won the Light Heavyweight Title from X-pac, but lost it back to him at SummerSlam. He won the WCW US Title from Kanyon but lost it to Rhyno at Unforgiven. He then won the WCW Cruiserweight Title from Billy Kidman in October, which was renamed the WWF Cruiserweight TItle when the WWF won at Survivor Series and banished the Alliance.

Tajiri was drafted to Vince McMahon's Smackdown brand after WrestleMania. He lost the title to Billy Kidman, and blamed the loss on his girlfriend Torrie Wilson. Kidman came to her aid, but Tajiri won the title back from him at Backlash. Torrie finally left Tajiri, and started dating Maven. Tajiri attacked Maven in a jealous rage, putting him out of action, and then lost the Cruiserweight Title to the Hurricane. Tajiri went into a slump, and then started teaming with the new Cruiserweight Champion, Jamie Noble. Their partnership dissolved in the fall, and Noble beat Tajiri at No Mercy.
