Our Heritage:
New Philadelphia is a cutting edge community. As a Moravian mission, called Schoenbrunn, we were the first town built in Ohio. That was before we were even a state or for that matter a nation. The Pioneer Spirit that led to our start still exists in our city. We pride ourselves on community involvement and help. The ancient Greek meaning of the word Philadelphia is Brotherly Love. That sort of helping hand friendship is alive and well in New Phila. We have grown since those early days. We now have a Mall, New Towne, the first in our county. We have some heavy industry like Gradall, the only American made machine of its kind. Our Kent Branch Campus is uniquely funded by county residents. Harry Cleaver Field was the place John Glenn is said to have first begun his interest in flight. The finest small town city park in America, Tuscora Park, graces the northern boundary of our city and the park system is in a present expansion project. Sports & our schools have long been a focal point for community pride. The beloved Woody Hayes was born down the road in Newcomerstown, met his wife Ann here in New Phila. and began his upward spiraling coaching career here. Many fine athletes have since gone on to play for colleges across the nation and several even into the ranks of professional sports.
As we Quaker Cross Country Runners run the roads and courses around our city the legends live and our self pride builds. We are constantly reminded of how dedication and hard work have rewarded those before us. It will be the same for us and those who follow us. It is no secret here in Quaker Town that you get out of life what you put into it. That is the history of our great nation and that is the lesson of New Philadelphia Cross Country. We are a small part of a great tradition and we invite you to glean success from our example. Blazing the trail to success from the Moravian Trail to our towpaths, streets and on to the race course has championed a journey we believe to be achievable. Together we can make a difference and even by our individuality we see the benefits.
