Reasearch on the Infidelity Inventory

The Infidelity Inventory is an assessment instrument based on the "infidelity triad" formuled by Howard Horwitz, Ph.D. The infidelity triad consists of entitlement, anger, and chaos/disorientation and characterizes the betrayer – not the betrayal. More specifically, the character structure of spouses who are unfaithful are seen as consisting of varying amounts of entitlement (evidenced by such statements as "I’m entitled to my share of happiness"); anger (e.g., "I’ve been dominated by women all of my life. I need to get out of their grip"); and chaos/disorientation (e.g., "I truly do not know who I was or what I was doing when I was cheating"). The Infidelity Inventory is designed to generate this characterization for the betraying spouse.

At present, research on the Infidelity Inventory is being conducted for the purpose of generating descriptive statistics. A clinician that uses the inventory is asked to follow the protocol below and then report the results on to Dr. Horwitz. (Though the instrument is not copyrighted, all that use it are asked to notify us that they are doing so.)

Protocol:
ÿ Administer to both husband and wife at the same time.
The Infidelity Inventory: Husband is administered when the husband has been the unfaithful spouse. Form H is given to the husband to characterize himself; and Form W is given to the wife to characterize her husband. The Infidelity Inventory: Wife is administered when the wife has been the unfaithful spouse. Form W is given to the wife to characterize herself; and Form H is given to the husband to characterize his wife.
ÿ Administer within the first 5 sessions (preferably, though not necessarily, the second session) after infidelity has been revealed.
ÿ After both spouses have filled out their own forms, they are asked to discuss their answers with each other in session and come to an agreed answer for each item. The agreed-upon profile is the one that is scored.
ÿ To complete the scoring, write the answer for the item in the white box at the end of the row (below the words "Do Not Write Here.") Total the six white boxes in each column, and write the total in the box at the bottom. The maximum column score is 30. The first column total is the entitlement score. The second column total is the anger score. The third column total is the chaos/disorientation score.

Please address questions to Dr. Horwitz by e-mail or telephone.
