Hoping for a Miracle

Disclaimer in Intro.

When we last met, Betty just told Scott that Rita had died. Now it is Christmas of 1943 as things are starting to happen in Europe. The gang is more worried about their friends than ever.

"Tonight we would like to commerate Rita Donahue, who was a friend of ours. She died while bringing them to safety. In her bravery, planes above were bombing and guns were shooting. Because of her help few people died. Rita was an officer in the WACS, and is survived by her husband. We wish him luck as he fights overseas, and we will miss her very much," Betty said on "A Special Tribute". Betty tried to keep her composure, but it was hard for her to do, and nobody knew if Kyle was told of his wife's passing.

Scott and Betty were playing with the twins. The twins had now started talking and were full of energy. As the saying goes father like son, and added daughter like mother. The foursome watched the rain fall hard outside their small home.

"Mommy, why does the rain fall?" asked Anne.

"Ask you father. He knows all about those things," said Betty, as Scott gave her a look of thanks a lot.

"It rains because the Lord is unhappy," Anne's daddy explained hesitantly.

"Why?" asked Andy.

"Because we're doing bad things."

"Is he mad at me?" asked Anne.

"No, how could anyone be mad at you, sweetheart?" Betty asked her daughter with a smile.

"How about me?" asked Andy.

"You're a different matter. You're just too much like your father," said Betty. Betty had't been feeling well that night, but she felt really sick at that moment. She ran off to the bathroom.

"Is Mommy sick?" asked Anne.

"I don't know. I'm going to check," said Scott worriedly. As he approached the bathroom, Betty walked out. She looked positively green and she was about to say something when she fainted into his arms. He took her up into his arms and brought her to the couch.

"Why don't you guys go get ready for bed? I'll take care of Mommy. We'll be up in a little bit," said Scott.

"Ok Daddy," said Andy.

Betty woke up a few minutes later. "Scott, what happened?" Betty groggily asked.

"You fainted. How do you feel?"

"Very light headed. I wonder what made it happen?"

"I don't know, but I say you should go to the doctor. You've been complaining about being sick for a while now."

"I don't need to see a doctor. I'm just probably haven't eaten enough lately."

"All right, but if anything else happens, you're going directly to the doctor. Are you going to be able to walk upstairs?"

"Yes. Let's go put the kids to bed."

Two days later, Eugenia knocked on Scott's door, then walked in. "Scott, I think you should come quick. It's Betty," Eugenia exclaimed.

"Where is she?" asked Scott, who was almost out the door.

"She's in the Green Room."

Scott bolted out the door and ran into the Green Room. Betty was on the couch. "She fainted. She was complaining about having a huge pain in her stomach," said Hilary, worried.

Scott walked over to Betty and took her hand. "I knew I should have had her go to the doctor," Scott murmured to himself.

"Something else has happened?" asked Maple.

"She got sick and passed out," answered Scott. "I'll bring her as soon as I can." Betty started to stir.

"How do you feel?" asked Eugenia.

"Like I've been hit in the stomach with a five ton ball. How does that sound?"

"Not good. I'm taking you to the hospital," said Scott.

**************************************************************************************************

Scott and Betty took a taxi to the hospital and carried her in against her will. "Last time I checked, I had two legs that worked," Betty pointedly reminded her husband.

"No doing. You're sick," replied Scott.

"Scott, please."

They checked in, and got to see the doctor right away. Time went by slowly as they waited for the test results. They tested for everything. Then, the doctor finally entered.

"Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood, congratulations! You're having a baby. I just need you to make an appointment, and you'll be all set," said the doctor happily.

"You're kidding me! I didn't feel this way before with the twins," Betty protested.

"Each baby can cause different reactions," answered the doctor. Betty headed out to make the appointment. "Mr. Sherwood, may I speak to you a moment?"

"Sure, what is it?"

"I don't want your wife to know about anything I tell you. I looked up her past medical records and saw she had a bad accident in June, am I correct?"

"Yes. She lost the baby that she was carrying at the time. But what does that have to do with this baby?"

"The accident caused some injuries that killed the baby and left permament damage. This might be the reason for all the pain. What I need you to do is make sure she doesn't work too much. Do whatever you can for her without driving her crazy. Make sure she gets as much rest as possible."

"I get all of that, but she'll be going crazy when I try to do things for her by the second day. She likes to do things for herself."

"You'd better be going. Try to do your best, if you don't want to cause the baby's death or hers or both."

"Thanks for the warning," said Scott as he left the room.

Betty waited for him outside. She saw the puzzled look on his face. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

**************************************************************************************************

The pregnancy went by very slowly as June came along Betty was having lots of problems, which made it difficult to do her work. They hired a co - writer to perform some of Betty's writing chores. It was June 1st, 1944.

Scott and Betty were having a meeting with Mrs. Day of Sweet Day candies. "Ah, Scott, I think we should hold off this meeting for awhile," Betty suddenly wailed. She was looking positively green.

"Why? What's wrong?" asked Scott.

"It's time for the baby!" exclaimed Betty.

"You mean now?" said Mrs. Day. "It really didn't pick a convient time, did it?"

"Who cares if it was convient? Scott, I mean now!" Betty shrieked.

They headed to the hospital and got Betty a room right away. The nurse came in, looking over Betty's record. "Mrs. Sherwood, according to the records, you're pregnancy is high-risk. In these situations, we may have to make a choice between you and the baby. If there was little chance to save both of you, who would you rather us try to save more?" asked the nurse.

"Scott, I don't want to make this decision, but since I have to, I want the baby to live. I couldn't go on knowing I killed another for myself," Betty said softly.

"You can't do that! What will happen to Anne and Andy without their mother. They need you. Betty, I need you," said Scott.

"I have to do it. The question may never come up, anyway."

"I hope not."

"I think it's time to call the nurse back in. The baby's getting impatient."

**************************************************************************************************

Scott sat restlessly in the Waiting Room. The nurse said that someone would give him all the latest news. He was supposed to call WENN when he heard anything.

"Mr. Sherwood, they have to make a choice now. To be honest, there is little chance of saving either one. Your wife chose the baby. The doctor believes there is more chance in this situation," the nurse explained.

Scott looked up at her and a real tear fell from his face. "Do your best, please. I couldn't live without her."

"We'll do our best." She added to herself, "Right now, what we need is a miracle."
