Normandy, 1944

Disclaimer on the introduction page.

When we last met, Betty was having her baby, but there was a chance of one or both of them dying. It is a couple of days later, and news of the D-Day invasions is ringing out of radios.

Scott looked at his watch. It was midnight. He was called to Washington D.C. to do some cryptonalisis for the government, but all he wanted to do was go home and be with his wife. Both her and their new daughter had survived the labor. He felt like the luckiest man on Earth. It was a close call for both of them, but they were both very sick and tired. He went back to work trying to decode the latest message. It took him a while, but he finally figured it out. It read, "D - Day: Normandy. First paratroopers have landed. Successful start."

The bombs were falling all around Kyle. He was low on ammunition and completely exahsted. He climbed into a foxhole to rest for a second. Inside of his jacket pocket he found the last letter his wife wrote him. A couple of days later after recieving, it he heard the news of her death. He read it for what seemed the millionth time.

Dearest Kyle,

It looks like I will be able to go home early. I haven’t been feeling well lately, so I went to see the doctor. You won’t believe the news. I’m going to have a baby! I guess that weekend furlough caused more than to make me miss you more each day. Please take care of yourself. Our child needs a father, and so do I. I have to go. I love you!

Rita Donahue

Kyle sat there, holding the letter tightly. The tears came to his eyes at the memory of his precious and late spouse. He loved her more then anything in the world. He wasn't sure about the future anymore. He knew he would go back to being an actor if he wasn’t badly injured. He started to climb out of the foxhole as a bomb blew up in front of him. He was thrown back into the hole.

Betty was trying to rest, but the bed was not very comfortable. Hospital beds should be comfortable. She was happy that she would be able to go home in a couple of days.

Mackie knocked on the door. "How are you, Betty?" he asked shyly. He held a flower in his hand.

"A lot better. Have you heard the any news from Scott?" she asked apprehensively.

"No. He’s probably just fine. Here’s a letter for you from Kyle and this rose is from me."

"Thank you. I hope he’s doing fine. I’ll read the letter latter. Tell me all the news at WENN."

"Oh, the same old things. Sometimes, it'll turn into chaos, though. We really need you."

"I’ll be able to leave in a couple of days. The baby will stay a little longer to be observed."

"I should be heading back to the station. Take care."

"Thanks, Mackie. Bye."

"Bye."

"What the blazes was that? What in the world was Betty thinking while writing that script?" screamed Hilary at Jeff while walking out of Studio A.

"Hilary, Betty didn’t write that script. Gertie did. Betty only planned on being gone for a week, so Gertie took over," said Jeff calmly. There was no use of both of them being mad.

"Gertie, I should have known. I’m going to give her a piece of my mind!"

Hilary walked purposefully down to the Writer’s Room.

Gertie sat at the desk, typing another script. She loved being able to write down all the ideas she'd collected over the years. Being head writer was so much fun, and having an excuse to not sit at the switchboard all day was even more appealing.

Hilary walked into the Writer’s Room and gave Gertie an evil smile. "So, Gertie, you're the one writing these things called scripts," Hilary calmly stated just before she was about to explode.

"Hilary, why don’t you get to the point? I can tell you don’t like them, and you know I don’t care. If you don’t like them, that's your problem. How about you writing them? But you have to be on the air in a minute, so you can’t. Here’s your next script. Good-bye. I have to get working."

Hilary took the script, and yelled "Ugh. I'll get you back for this." She turned around and walked angrily by Mr. Eldridge, who had just walked in.

"What happened to Hilary?" asked Mr. Eldridge.

"Nothing. You know Hilary."

"She can surely make a mountain out of a mole hill."

"Was there something you needed, Tom?"

"There’s a man on the phone who wants to talk to Scott. What should I tell him?"

"He’s not here."

"But I tried to tell him that, and he said he didn’t believe me."

"I’ll talk to him then. I’ll be right there."

Eugenia loved babysitting the little twins, who were almost three years old. She watched them at night after getting home from work. Their grandmother would watch them during the day until Eugenia took over. The kids had finally fallen asleep. Eugenia sat down to read a book.

There was a knock on the door. Eugenia went to answer the door. Mr. Foley stood hopefully on the stoop. They'd dated for a while, but only a few people knew about it, including Betty and Scott.

"Come on in, but please be quiet. I just got the kids to sleep," whispered Eugenia. Mr. Foley just nodded his head, and walked in. They sat down and talked quietly to each other. Mr. Foley took out a small velvet box. He handed it to her. She opened it and found a small engagement ring and a note. She read the note, hugged him, and exclaimed, "Of course, I'll marry you!"

Betty walked into the station. No one was to be seen at the switchboard. Gertie must be writing scripts. She hadn't told anyone when she was coming home. She stopped in front of Studio A and watched a little of the broadcast. No one looked her way, and so she headed down to the Writer’s Room and walked in.

"Good morning, Gertie," she said cheerfully.

"You’re home! No more writing for me. I love to get away from the switchboard, but I can’t do the writing very well."

"I’m anxious to get back to writing. So, what did you have happen in the shows?"

"Quite a lot. I wrote all of my plotlines down for you right here. Hilary hated my scripts."

"I'll bet she did. I’m going to go visit the others. You wouldn’t believe how much I missed this place."

"I understand. It would be like leaving home. Go say hi to the rest of the staff."

Maple walked out of Studio A and headed into the Green Room. She was tired of wondering what happened to Noah. He hadn't written in a long time. At least she hadn't heard from the government, either.

"Are you o.k., Maple?" asked Betty as she enteredthe room. "Here’s a letter for you."

"Thanks, Betty," said Maple with a smile. She took the letter and opened it. "It’s from Noah." Betty headed out the door, knowing that Maple would like some privacy. When she left, Maple began to read it.

Maple love,

You wouldn’t believe what was mailed to me. I have won a special award for best actor in a stage musical. I tied with Kyle. They didn’t forget us. At least I know my career willl be there for me when I get home. I can’t wait to be home and be with you. I love you with all of my heart. I’m trying my hardest to survive this war.

Love, Noah

Maple went out to find Betty. She found her in Scott’s office. "Betty, guess what! Noah won a special award. He tied with Kyle," exclaimed Maple in delight, but stopped suddenly when she saw the look on Betty’s face. "What’s wrong, Betty?"

"Kyle was captured by the Nazis. They don’t know if he's dead or alive," answered Betty softly.

"Oh, no! I hope he'll be all right."

"Of course he will. We have to be hopeful."

June 13th - The Last Day

Scott finally returned home. He walked into WENN. Noone was at Gertie’s station.

"Scott, you’re home!" exclaimed Betty as she ran to him and gave him a big hug. "I’ve missed you so much."

"I missed you, too!" He pulled them slightly apart and kissed her.

When they parted Betty said "We can go home once I give the sign-off."

"Can I do it instead?"

"Of course." They headed into the studio.

"Tonight, before I say good night, I would like to say something. During this past week many men and women have lost their lives to win a great battle. It's over now. The war is not over, but the result of the battle has turned the tide of the war. We'll always be here to report the latest news. Have a good night, and pleasant dreams. This is WENN, signing off."
