PHS SOCCER EARNS TIE, WIN IN TWO GAMES
By Charlie Bergmann, Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, September 5th, 2008
The Pinecrest Patriot soccer team had plenty of scoring opportunities in the team's most recent two games. The difference? Converting those opportunities.
Wednesday the Patriots battled Lee County to a scoreless tie, despite controlling the action.
The best opportunity for the Patriots came off the foot of Thomas Goulden, whose shots twice struck the goal frame.
In the first half Goulden unleashed a shot from about 30 yards out that hit the top bar and sailed over the Jacket goal.
In the second half, another Goulden shot struck the frame after glancing off the head of a Jacket defender.
"We had some really good opportunities early," Patriot coach Larry Martin said. "One goal might have changed their attitude. It certainly would have changed ours."
Jacket goalkeeper Patrick Hamel had a busy night, stopping six shots along with gathering up an assortment of through balls, and picking off Patriot corner kicks. The Patriots' Lewis Cable and Matt Scott combined for their third shutout in four matches.      "It was very difficult for either team to establish any possession or put anything together," Martin said. "Their goalkeeper played a great game and they showed a lot of desire."
Pinecrest plays three games next week, including its Mid-Southeastern Conference opener at Douglas Byrd on Monday. The Pats entertain Scotland County in another league fray on Wednesday before closing the week with a match against seventh-ranked Leesville Road on Friday.
In Wednesday's preliminary contest, the Pinecrest Green junior varsity squad defeated Lee County 7-1. The Patriot goal scorers were Bryce Baldelli (3), Gray Anderson, Preston Foote and Jimmy Casey. Dane Nelson was credited with a pair of assists.
