Monday the Patriots struck for three goals, including a spectacular strike by Matt Carriker, en route to a 3-1 win over Laney at the John Williams Athletic Complex Monday evening.
Trailing 1-0 after a goal in the second minute of the game, the Pats evened the score in the 12th minute when Brandon Wilkins sent a square pass toward Carriker in the center of the field. From about 40 yards away, the senior midfielder unloaded a low, rising shot that eluded the Buc goalkeeper.
"All I did was look at the goal and rip it as hard as I could," Carriker said later. "I was kind of lucky."
Patriot coach Larry Martin couldn't remember ever seeing a ball struck that hard, from so far out, find the net.
"That was as good as they get," the Patriot coach said. "I saw some that were close, but that ball was sizzling and had some motion on it. I'm glad I wasn't the goalkeeper because I probably would have stood there and clapped."
The Patriots took a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute when Max Brenner finished a pass from John Kropp. Five minutes later, Brenner got behind the Buc defense again and was taken down in the penalty box. Eric Parziale made the spot kick for a 3-1 Patriot lead.
"We just lost our shape a little bit, and when you do that, you'll get punished," Laney coach Dave Karlson said.
"They're a quality opponent and I thought we gave them a good effort. We both have a long way to go."
The win was Martin's 225th in his coaching career.
The Patriot jayvee Green team (2-0) defeated Laney 7-0 as Gray Anderson scored four goals. Others finding the net for the home team were Blaine Little, Bryce Baldelli and Kevin Grasso. Zach Pressley (2), Chris Potter (2) and Morgan Van Camp were credited with assists.
At South View, the Patriot jayvee Gold team opened its season with an 8-0 win over the Tigers.
