Sandy Carawan's Caravan of Ancestors

"Far away places with strange-soundin' names
Far away over the sea
Those far away places with the strange-soundin' names
Are callin', callin' me
They call me a dreamer, well maybe I am
But I know that I'm burnin' to see
Those far away places with the strange-soundin' names
Are callin', callin' me."

Lyrics written by Alex C. Cramer and Joan Whitney and abstracted from the 1948 song "Far Away Places."

When Bing Crosby melodically croons the words to this song, I become entranced and dream of those "far away places" where many of my ancestors lived, loved, laughed, cried, and departed the Old Country for a better life. I am grateful to my ancestors, whom with a gleam of hope in their eyes and a burning desire within their bosom, not only endured hardships but also sacrificed as they traveled across the great, turbulent ocean waters and migrated throughout the vast wilderness in search of a better life in the "land of the free."
