Several other types of colonialism include preexisting empires, internal colonialism, and spheres of influence or informal empires. Preexisting empires were or had been powerful nations that possesed large populations, strong political structures, and a sophisticated economy. India under the British is a good example.

In internal colonialism, one ethnic group dominated another within the same country. Examples of this are the Nornthern United States domination over the South after the Civil War, or the British domination over the British Isles.

In spheres of influence or informal empires, European interfered with the internal affairs of another state but never came to a formal political annexation. In the 19th century, several European nations declared these so-called spheres of influence over China.
