Family records list his birth city as Worcester, but a trip to Worcester in 1991 and a perusal of the business directories of the time found no record of the Schwabe family ever being in Worcester, or any Germans for that matter. There is, however, a Schwabe family in Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts, that might be related to our Schwabe line. In any case, Roy, their first child, was born 1879 in Bay City, Michigan, so the Swabys must have moved out of Massachusetts shortly after their marriage. The three-member family (Alfred, Flora and Charles R. [sic] Schwabe) show up on the 1880 Census in Bay City. He is listed as a 27-year-old "Laborer" born in Massachusetts; she also 27 and young Charles as 7 months old.
