"As most of you know in July & August TCM [Turner Classic Movies] will be showing 3 of Mabel’s very best Keystone comedies. In particular, I want you to see the version of 'Tillie Punctured Romance.' [August 4, 2008 @ 8 AM] This is not the 50-minute version this is the 72-minute version. The 22 minutes make the whole film make sense!
"In 2004, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences première the restored film, it was
restored by the Film and Television Archive at UCLA with the help of the British Film Institute.
"It took viewing 30 copies before they ended up using 13 different copies according to Ross Lipman, the UCLA restorationist. It was again shown at Pordenone that year. Since 2004, 'Tillie' has been shown at a number of silent film festivals but this will be the first time this fabulous 'Tillie' will be shown to the general public.
"Don’t miss this screening; this was Hollywood's first feature-length comedy film, it is pretty
close to the 1914 release that Mack Sennett produced and directed. It has a number of the Keystone trademark pratfalls, and the 'madcap' Keystone Kops’ chance at the very end. Mabel, Charlie Chaplin and Marie Dressler are at the height of their game, very athletic, Mabel is beautiful, Charlie’s timing never was better, and the promise that Marie would later bring into focus in films like 'Min and Bill' can be seen. They are wonderful together.
"Sennett had adapted Marie's huge stage hit 'Tillie's Nightmare' for her debut adding Mabel &
Charlie into this gamble. It was a real gamble, the budget ran over $200,000 (a lot in 1914
dollars) and no one knew if an audience would sit through almost an hour of horseplay. It
became a spectacular success. What a joyful romp.
"Also in July TCM will show, Mabel's Willful Way and Mabel's Simple Life."
