NEW SPEEDWAY TRACK OPENS -

The opening meeting at the new Ellenbrook Speedway near Bullsbrook will be held today. The first event starts at noon and races will be held for several classes of saloon cars, modifieds and super modifieds.Racing is being organised by the Racing Drivers' Association of WA who previously ran the Wattle Grove circuit. The club's new speedway circuit is built on a 41 acre site that was purchased three years ago.  The new track is 510 metres in length and 15 metres wide. It is situated in Ellenbrook Road and is 37km (23 miles) from Perth.

The track is reached by travelling along Great Northern Highway from Midland. After passing the Walyunga National Park, take the first turn left into Warbrook Road. Cross over the bridge and turn left into Ellenbrook Road. After spending 14 years at Wattle Grove, the RDA is naturally pleased to have its own racing complex at Ellenbrook.

To date about $40,000 has been spent on the project. Most of the work has been done by volunteer workers and the club wishes to thank all who have given their support to the project.
Brick toilets and canteens are being constructed and a children's playground is also under consideration.
However, due to lack of finance, these buildings have not yet been completed. The executive committee of the club have decided to start racing at the circuit in order to help finance the rest of the project.
The Club President Martin Laughton wishes to thank all firms who have donated equipment and building materials as without their support it would not be possible to open the area to the public. Any donations of bricks and plumbing equipment would be gratefully
appreciated by club officials.

As the club owns the land outright, a lot of thought has gone into safety at the circuit and they have also allowed for future development at the site. An 18 metre (60 foot) wide runoff area has cleared between the edge of the track and the spectators. This is sand at present, but will be grassed in the future. The centre of the circuit has already been grassed. As no driver has had any practice runs on the new circuit, the first meeting should be interesting. Several drivers who raced at Claremont during the summer are expected to take part. In the super modified section the honours should be between Martin Laughton, who was third in the WA Sprintcar title at Claremont, and Peter Cox. Drivers to watch in the modifieds will be Ray Tulk, Les Snellin and Mick Henwood. In the saloon car events Terry Haines, Terry Carr, John Bairstowe, Brian Rose and Jack Winterswyk should be prominent. A percentage of the gate takings will go towards the Civilian Maimed and Limbless Association's Appealathon.
