Sniping Strategy Guide

Mechs and Weapons Choice

Using Terrain

Word of Warning

Sniping is taking out your opponent from a distance, and if you are good at it, taking little or no damage from the opponent.  There are several factors that will influence how well you do at sniping: Mech choice, using terrain, and the weapons that you are trying to snipe with.  Another factor will be the map that is chosen.  Some maps are better suited for sniping than other maps are.  The best maps for sniping include River City, Stonecold, Coliseum, and to a lesser degree Hell’s Kitchen.

Mechs and Weapon Choice

The best Mechs to choose for sniping are the ones that are armed with PPC’s, gauss rifles, and javelin missiles.  The Mechs that have these are in all four types of Mechs.  For the light Mechs, the best choices are the Hackman and the Puma.  The Hackman is armed with a gauss rifle and has null sig for a defense and jump jets.  The null sig makes the Mech a good choice, as you can attack invisibly, and the jump jets allow you to reach areas where you can get a good view of the map.  The Puma is a good choice for the same reasons, except it is armed with a PPC rather than a gauss rifle.

There are several Medium Mechs that are the best for sniping are the Belial and the Uziel.  The Belial has two gauss rifles and has jump jets.  The Uziel is armed with two PPC’s and has jump jets as well.

There are also two Heavy Mechs that are good for sniping.  These three Mechs are the Mad Cat, the Timberwolf, and the Catapult.  The Mad Cat is armed with two PPC’s and it has a defense of target jamming.  The Timberwolf is armed with two gauss rifles, but has no special defense. The Catapult has four pulse lasers and four javelin missiles and has target jamming as its defense.

Of the Assault Mechs, there are three Mechs that can be used for sniping.  These are the Prometheus, Ragnarok, and Ymir.  The Prometheus is armed with two gauss rifles and has chaff as a defense.  The Ragnarok is also armed with two gauss rifles and has a shield for defense.  The Ymir is also armed with two gauss rifles and two PPC’s and has a shield for its defense.  The Ymir may seem that it is the best Mech to choose from these three, but it will overheat quickly.

There are other Mechs that make use of the javelin missile, and they have uses as sniping Mechs, but only the Catapult is set up primarily for the role of sniping with this weapon.

Using Terrain

You will need to become very familiar with the terrain in the different maps that are available in MA to be a good sniper.  Finding the proper place to snipe from can make the difference between picking up a kill and becoming one.  You will also find it easier to move around on the map once you have become familiar with the maps.  Make sure that you choose a vantage point that will allow you to keep track of your teammates if you are playing one of the team multiplayer games, or it will also allow you to keep track of weakened enemies to finish them off.

Word of Warning

As unfortunate as it is, there are some players that look down upon snipers, calling them “terrain cheaters” and saying they “stole their kills.”  These same people can become very agitated and if you are playing on Live, may start cursing into the microphone at you.  If this happens, ignore the babbling idiots.  It is a game, and there will always be those that want to make more of it than what it is.  If you find it easier to play using sniping techniques, use them and ignore the mindless idiots that scream into the mike, you can always mute them.
