The MCELWAIN Family belongs to all of the other families with similar spellings. They were originally from Ayr, Scotland and were Lord's. The House of Grimmet by WILLIAM ORDWAY is a good reference. Since I can no longer get the link for the House of Grimmet, I will outline below the lineage in Scotland. The MCELWAIN family then went to Ireland mainly to Antrium County Cavern. Then they wandered to America, some going to MA, NH, & NY. From there they branched out all over the United States.

JAMES MCELWAIN who came to Massachusetts from Ireland in the early 1700's with his brother TIMOTHY MCELWAIN and his son TIMOTHY MCELWAIN was said to come from Broughshane.

BROUGHSHANE

Broughshane is a market and post-town in the parish of Racavan, barony of Lower Antrim, county of Antrim and the province of Ulster, 28 3/4 miles (N. NW) of Belfast and 109 miles (N.) of Dublin. Broughshane has 828 inhabitants when this article was written (date unk).

This town is pleasantly situated on the river Braid at the termination of the mail coach road from Ballymena. It has a sub-post-office. Broughshane consists of one long street containing about 180 houses indifferently built. In a neighbourhood are several gentlemen's seats and at no great distance is Tullymore Lodge finely situated on a stream tributary to the Braid.

The market is on Tuesday and is principally for butter and pork. Fairs are held on June 17th and September 3rd. A constabulary police force has been stationed here and the manorial court of Buckna is held here every month for the recovery of debts amounting to 20 pounds.

The Church of the Union of Skerry or the Braid, a neat edifice with a spire, is situated in the town. There is also a place of worship for Presbyterians in connection with the Synod of Ulster. There is also a dispensary in town.

At Dumfare, the vicinity, is a large mount (mountain?)of very imposing aspect.

Hi Norma, Thanks for the great work!! I have been doing a little research myself and I have seen in the genealogy accounts that the wife of Alexander McElwain (born before 1750 in Londonderry) was Frances Jocelyn also referred to as Rowden-- the daughter of Lord Rowden or Lord Rouden but I found that if her father was indeed a lord--then he was probably Robert Jocelyn, Earl of Roden and mother was Lady Anne Hamilton. The LDS site has a Caroline Frances Jocelyn, dau of Robert and Anne Jocelyn born 12 May 1755 baptised at St. Peter and St. Kevin in Dublin, County Cork Ireland but she does not appear in the peerage information probably due to the fact that she was disowned and disinherited by the family but I am still researching. See below:

"Robert Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden 1 M, #216615
Last Edited=10 Jan 2012 Robert Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden is the son of Robert Jocelyn, 1st Viscount Jocelyn.2 He married Lady Anne Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassill and Lady Harriet Bentinck, on 11 December 1752.1
He gained the title of 1st Earl of Roden. Children of Robert Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden and Lady Anne Hamilton
Robert Jocelyn, 2nd Earl of Roden+ b. 26 Oct 1756, d. 29 Jun 1820
Hon. George Jocelyn+2 b. 7 Dec 1764, d. Apr 1798
Hon. John Jocelyn+2 b. 1769, d. 21 Jan 1828

Alexander McElwain (m.1766/1769;d.Bef 1790-Co. Cork Ireland) is my 4th great grandfather on my maternal grandmother's side.
Cheers and keep up the good work!! (I am sitting here at my computer up to my elbows in print-outs! That's genealogy for you!)
