From DALE FERRELL daleferrell@hotmail.com
My gggg grandmother was SARAH MCELWAIN, born 24 Aug 1739 in Palmer, Hampden Co., Mass. She married TIMOTHY FERRELL (born 4 Jan 1734 in Palmer, died 8 Feb 1814 in Palmer) on 1 Dec 1760 in Palmer. She died 27 April 1819 in Palmer. Both are buried in Old Center Cemetery, in Palmer MA.

SARAH MCELWAIN was daughter of TIMOTHY MCELWAIN and his first wife, ANNA SPEAR. TIMOTHY was born about 1709 probably in Broughshan, County Antrim in Northern Ireland. He died 7 Sept 1790 in Palmer. He married first ANNA SPEAR on 24 Aug 1738 in Palmer. (ANNA was born about 1709 in Colraine, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, daughter of DAVID SPEAR & JANE or JEAN FULTON; ANNA died 28 April 1746 in Palmer); He married second SUSANNAH THOMPSON 10 Aug 1750 in Palmer. SUSANNAH died after 13 Sept 1761.

TIMOTHY MCELWAIN was son of JAMES MCELWAIN, who died 1730-31 in Palmer, and ELENOR --?-- who died after 1733.

JAMES MCELWAIN, his wife, and two sons (TIMOTHY & JAMES JR) came to Massachusetts from Northern Ireland in 1718 and settled near the junction of the Swift and Ware rivers. JAMES JR is said to have returned to Ireland unmarried, so all MCELWAIN'S in the Palmer area are probably descended from TIMOTHY. The family probably migrated to Northern Ireland from Grimet, Ayrshire, Scotland, possibly several generations earlier, but this is unproven.

I'm also interested in SARAH MCELWAIN'S brother JOHN ALLEN MCELWAIN, born 12 March 1743 Palmer, died 18 Sept 1833 Palmer, married first to MIRIAM SPEAR on 15 Aug 1779 Palmer (MIRIAM born 1743, died 27 May 1790); married second HANNAH MELVIN on 22 Sept 1793 Palmer. My ggg grandfather JOHN ALLEN FERRELL was named for his uncle JOHN ALLEN MCELWAIN.

I'm hoping to visit Old Center Cemetery, but it probably won't happen until 2003. So I am interested in any photos you might have of any of the above mentioned McElwains.

My personal connection to the MCELWAIN'S of Palmer & Thorndike, Mass. is by marriage only. My KEITH'S lived on the MCELWAIN property in Thorndike for 3 generations. My 80 year old grandfather lived there and actually worked in that cemetery as a boy tending the graves and mowing the lawn with his father. I was there this past summer and just wanted to pass this McElwain info onto others...

Norma:
I can't think of anything else about SARAH MCELWAIN that wasn't included in that posting (other than her children & grandchildren).

I did note some incorrect info on your website. You say:
"The 1790 Massachusetts Census shows both CAPTAIN TIMOTHY MCELWAIN SR and his father JAMES MCELWAINE b. Ireland d. 1730 m. ELINOR ___ )in the Winchendon Town."

The JAMES MCELWAIN in 1790 can't be TIMOTHY'S father, because his father died about 1730. Because TIMOTHY'S brother returned to Ireland, all MCELWAIN'S in and around Palmer are probably descendants of TIMOTHY, so this JAMES is probably either an unknown son of TIMOTHY, a known son under a different name or a grandson.

I am related through SARAH MCELWANE:

1-1 TIMOTHY McELWANE, son of JAMES McELWANE

NEXT GENERATION:

2-1 SARAH McELWANE b. 24 Aug 1739 Palmer Hampden MA d. 27 Apr 1819 Palmer Hampden MA, bur Old Center Cem Palmer Hampden MA m. 1 Dec 1760 Palmer Hampden MA to LT TIMOTHY FERRELL SR b. 4 Jan 1734 "The Elbows" now Palmer Hampden MA d. 8 Feb 1814 Palmer Hampden MA, bur. Old Center Cem. Palmer Hampden MA, son ROBERT FERRELL & ELIZABETH.

TIMOTHY'S father, ROBERT FERRELL with his wife, ELIZABETH, arrived in Massachusetts in 1720 from Northern Ireland. He was one of the early Scotch Irish settlers of Rutland, Mass. About 1727 they arrived in Palmer. ELIZABETH'S tombstone says she bore 16 children of ROBERT.

REV THOMAS WILSON, at the centennial address in 1852 refers to a fort erected by new settlers, including Lieut. TIMOTHY FERRELL SR. The settlers used to go to their fields with a gun in one hand and a how or scythe in the other. The women left at home "had loaded firearms ready, and ready arms to use them in defense of themselves and their little ones." It was related by a descendant that "GRANDMOTHER FERRELL, all alone in her log cabin and startled by the howling of her dog, felt greatly relieved when she heard the well-known yell of a panther, and exclaimed, "Oh, Mister! I’m glad it is only you!" A most natural experience and a pleasant family reminiscence." Aside from DALE FERRELL, a later descendant, "That’s the voice of ELIZABETH, wife of ROBERT FERRELL coming to us circa 1740’s. "Cool", huh?"

TIMOTHY FERRELL and his brother, JOSIAH FERRELL, served with the volunteers during the French & Indian War, 1754-1763. From 11 Sep 1755-25 Dec 1755 they were in CAPT. EBENEZER MOULTON'S Company, Crown Point Expedition on muster roll Sept 11 to Dec 25, as was ROBERT MCMASTER. In 1758, a muster roll of CAPT DANIEL BURT'S Co. of Foot for the reduction of Canada in COL WILLIAM WILLIAM'S included CORP TIMOTHY FERRELL of Palmer, mustered 10 Apr and discharged 4 Nov 1758, as were JAMES MCNITT and JOSHUA MCMASTER.

The payroll of CAPT EPHRAIM CHAPIN'S Co, COL RUGGLES WOODBRIDGES' Regt Aug 12 to Nov 30 1777 including: CORP JOHN MCMASTER, ISAAC FERRELL & ISAAC MCMASTER. On 9 Oct 1779 "orders were issued by the general court that men be raised to join the army at Claverack. The quota at Palmer was ten. The town voted to pay bounties of 300 pounds to these ten men. The following were drafted and paid fines of 50 pounds each...TIMOTHY FERRELL...The following served and were paid 60 pounds each..." Apparently TIMOTHY was drafted but paid a fine in lieu of Revolutionary War service. On 3 Aug 1784, TIMOTHY FERRELL SR, ROBERT FERRELL and JOHN ALLEN MCELWAIN were appoined a committee to give bonds to hold harmless the sheriff in a tax debt of several townspeople.

NEXT GENERATION

3-1 ELIZABETH "BETSY" FERRELL b. abt. 24 Dec 1762 Palmer Hampden MA d. 2 Apr 1806 Sodus Wayne NY m. 11 Jan 1781 (date intent) near Palmer Hampden MA to LT ISAAC WELD b. 13 Jun 1754 Dedham Norfolk MA chr. 16 Jun 1754 First Church Needham MA d. 2 Apr 1808 Sodus Bay Wayne NY; son NOAH WELD & ELEANOR ELLIS.

In about 1775 ISAAC WELD raised a company of men and was made Captain. He served under GEN GATES. Tradition says he served under BENEDICT ARNOLD at the Battle of Saratoga in NY in 1777 and was at the battle of Saratoga when English GEN BURGOYNE surrendered, according to 1893 report by J. EDWARD WELD. "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War" places him in CAPT MOSES DRAPER'S Co. of COL WILLIAM BOND'S (late COL THOMAS GARDINER'S) 37 Regt.. at Prospect Hill, 7 Oct and 30 Dec 1775 showing that he is from Guilford Windham VT; another record tells of ISAAC WELD or Wells serving the town of Petersham Worcester MA in the Continental army from 15 May 1778 for eight months; and he may have been the "ISAAC WELLS" who was commissioned by order in council 26 Sep 1780 on recommendation of COL TUPPER & GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON.

In 1781 ISAAC WELLS & ELIZABETH FERRELL filed an intention of marriage in Palmer Hampden MA. In 1782 he is found on the side of the "Yorkers" in Guilford Windham VT in the controversy over the status of VT. The court held at Marlboro on 17 Aug 1782 fined him two pounds and ten shillings for having accepted an ensigncy under the NY command. SIMEON FERRELL, BETSY'S Uncle, was similarly fined for accepting a lieutenancy. At the conclusion of the trial, WELD took the oath of allegiance to VT in open court, and his fine was remitted upon the plea of THOMAS CUTLER. (Council Records of VT, 18 Oct 1783 as cited bH.

Hall's "History of Eastern Vermont" p 452) In 1790 he was living at Guilford Windham VT (2 males under 16, 3 females and himself). They later lived in Wardsboro, Windham VT. The 1800 census shows the family in Oneida NY, and by it’s 1802 beginning, in the area which became Verona, Oneida NY. VERONA was created at the house of MARTIN LANGDON on 2 Mar 1802, about half a mile from what is now Verona Village. ISAAC WELD was chosen Commissioner of Roads and as Overseer of Highways. They were here at the birth of a child in Nov 1803. By April 1806 they were in Sodus Bay Wayne NY where BETSY FERRELL WELD died and where ISAAC WELD died April 1808.

*BROUGHSHANE, a market and post-town in the Parish of Racavan, Barony of Lower Antrim, County of Antrim, and Province of Ulster, 28 3/4 MILES (N.N.W.) from Belfast and 109 miles (N.) from Dublin, containing 828 inhabitants. This town is pleasantly situated on the river Braid at the termination of the mail coach road from Ballymena to which it has a sub-post-office and consists of one long street, containing about 180 houses indifferently built. In the neighbourhood are several gentlemen's seats; and at no great distance is Tullymore Lodge, finely situated on a stream tributary to the Braid.

The market is on Tuesday, and is principally for butter and pork; fairs are held on June 17th and Sept. 3rd. A constabulary police force has been stationed here; and the manorial court of Buckna is held here every month, for the recovery of debts amounting to 20 pounds.

The Church of the Union of Skerry, or the Braid, a neat edifice with a spire, is situated in the town, in which are also a place of worship for Presbyterians in connection with the Synod of Ulster, and a dispensary. At Dumfare, in the vicinity, is a large mount of very imposing aspect.

Dear Norma,
I'll send the information we discussed by snail mail. One is 5 pages, written in gorgeous handwriting from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Office of the Secretary, Revolutionary War Service of JOHN ALL MCELWAIN signed and sealed by the Secretary in 1901. It is copies of entries from some book describing 8 periods of service during the war.

The other paper is an application to the G.A.R. It is signed by George W. McElwain. It gives his age, town of birth, occupation and says he served as a private in Co K 24 Regiment of Mass Vols for 3 years. It is dated 1884. I think it is pretty good stuff.

In the same packet was a clipping describing JOHN A MCELWAIN, the Pastor of Clarendon Church. And a check for $8 signed by DORIS MCELWAIN on The Vienna Trust Company bank.

I found these in the secret compartment of an old desk about 10 years ago. I didn't know it had a secret compartment until a guest who knew old furniture whacked it in a particular spot and it popped open. The desk must have belonged to MARY DELANO MCELWAIN (1865-1936) who married my gg uncle WALTER SCOTT WADSWORTH (1860-1921). I think her father was GEORGE W MCELWAIN. MARY went by the name MAY and was quite plump. I do have pictures and am attaching a nice one. I don't know anything else about the family though.
