RALPH MCELWAIN (ROGER, TIMOTHY SR, JAMES) b. 1/10/1793 Palmer, MA d. 7/26/1837 probably in Holland, Erie Co., New York.
RALPH MCELWAIN (1830 Census) shows 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 60-70. I'm assuming that RALPH MCELWAIN'S mother, DELINA HILL MCELWAIN is living with him (m. 1790 in Palmer MA to husband ROGER who must be dead by now) because the census shows an older woman in his household. Also the child could not be our JOHN ALLEN MCELWAIN because our JOHN was born in November 1831.
In 1840 RALPH MCELWAIN has 1 male 5/10, 1 male 10/15, 1 male 30/40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5/10, 1 female 30/40, 1 female 50/60, 1 female 70/80. He was still in Holland, Erie, NY. He still doesn't have the right age child for our JOHN ALLEN MCELWAIN.
In 1850 there is a GEORGE MCELWAIN in Erie 111 Wales. This is probably GEORGE RALPH MCELWAIN (1837-1917). There is no RALPH MCELWAIN. He died in 1837.
HEIDI wrote, "A very long time ago, I think I saw a reference to ROGER MCELWAIN having died somewhere in transit to Wales. I don't think he ever made it to Wales itself. I think it was on the NY state page of usgenweb.com. At the time I didn't realize it was information pertaining to me so...you know how it goes.
One of RALPH MCELWAIN'S descendants joined the D.A.R. on his service record. He served in the Massachusetts troops under Captains Carpenter & Shaw.
MYRTLE E MCELWAIN (MRS CHARLES L MCGAVERN) b. Wales, Erie Co., NY joined the D.A.R. (#156696) citing her lineage as:
1) MYRTLE E MCELWAIN
2) Parents: GEORGE RALPH MCELWAIN (1837 - 1917) m. CATHERINE A DUBOIS (1843 - 1917)
3) Grandparents: RALPH MCELWAIN (1793 - 1837) m. ALMIRA MOORE ( - 1864) born in Winfield MA d. 1864 in Wales NY 2nd husband - Joe Weed of Weeds Hill
4) Great-grandparents: ROGER MCELWAIN m. 1790 to DELINA HILL in Palmer MA.
MYRTLE E MCELWAIN b. 1/16/1877 Wales, Erie, NY d. 4/12/1964 Buffalo, Erie, NY m. CHARLES LEIGHTON MCGAVERN of Wales b. 10/2/1872 Allegany NY d. 6/6/1948. Both CHARLES & MYRTLE MCGAVERN are buried in Hume NY. CHARLES MCGAVERN was in the Cornell University class of 1897.
GEORGE RALPH MCELWAIN b. 4/25/1837 Wales, Erie, NY d. 10/18/1917 Hume NY m. CATHERINE ANN DUBOIS b. 3/1/1843 Hume NY d. 12/21/1917 Hume NY. Their children were:
1) MYRA R MCELWAIN b. 8/21/1864 d. 1944 Hume NY
2) CLARA MAY MCELWAIN b. 11/25/1869 d. 1915
3) MYRTLE MCELWAIN.

Thank you for sending me the address of your web pages.
I only looked at it quickly but I can tell you a few more things. Did I tell you that I have been to Palmer MA to look at those records and cemeteries? I have tried very hard to find more information on DELINA HILL MCELWAIN but not much luck....
First of all, RALPH MCELWAIN married ALMIRA MOORE, not ELIZABETH. I am sure that he died in 1837 in Wales or Holland NY the same year his son GEORGE RALPH MCELWAIN was born. I am pretty sure that GEORGE RALPH was an only child.
The MOORE'S are a very well known family with a pretty complete genealogy done on them if you are ever interested...
I am on friendly terms with the town historian of Wales. We have been unable to find a burial or death record (none exist for time period) for RALPH. There is a potters field there and I assume that is where he is buried. She has done a lot of looking for my DUBOIS family connection.
I did some census look ups for Wales for my DUBOIS a few months back, but noted the following. Can't remember if I sent them to you.
For the 1850 census of Wales (which I saw at the LDS center in Hingham) there is a JOSEPH WEED age 38, wife ALMIRA age 40. GEORGE MCELWAIN is listed as age 14, with younger children MARY JANE WEED age 10 and JOSEPH WEED age 4.
So I assume his (RALPH MCELWAIN'S) widow remarried. I don't know what happened to her, but GEORGE RALPH MCELWAIN stayed in the area for the rest of his life.
LORENZO MCELWAIN is listed in that census, age 48, wife LOUISA, age 46, children WILLIAM MCELWAIN 19, SUSANNA MCELWAIN 18, MARY MCELWAIN 10, CHARLOTTE MCELWAIN 8.
In 1860 census LORENZO "MAC ELWANE" 57, LOUISA 56, WILLIAM 27, MARY 20 (listed as a school teacher).
Next door were JOHN MCELWAINE 28, wife CLARA 24, SARA 5, & MINA 3 (hard to read spelling). Perhaps these are your people? I find the index look ups can be a problem as the census takers were terrible spellers...
Oh, one more thing, it is MCGAVERN, not MCGOVERN, but not a biggie.
I'll look up some more if I have time.
HEIDI
