Malawi

This is the start of my journey from home to Africa to England to Greece to Spain and back to the States. Mary was finishing her senior year of college in England and I convinced her that Africa was the perfect destination for spring break. We're trying to hit all of the continents so it she was an easy sell! A good friend of mine (Melanie) was stationed in Malawi with the Peace Corps so that's where we went for two short weeks. We saw a lot of the small country in what time we had. For those of you who don't know, Malawi is located near Mozambique in South-East Africa. It's a small, thin country that curls around Lake Malawi. It's a beautiful country with wonderful people and even though someone stole my shoes, Malawi is highly recommended by me!!

An African Safari

One of the first places we went in Malawi was to the Mvuu Camp located on a river/lake south of Lake Malawi. While Malawi isn't known for it's wildlife, it was still pretty awesome to be in a reserve! We were treated and fed like royalty and took two safaris every day (3 day stay), one on the river and one at night through the reserve. I was disappointed to not see any meat-eating animals but we did see an elephant, lots of crocodiles, monkeys, hundreds of hippos, exotic birds and very large bugs!

The photo on the left is of Mary sitting in front of a boabob tree with the main lodge in the background. These trees are so huge! The lodge doesn't have any electricity and we ate as a group in the candlelight every night. We had lanterns that we had to take everywhere we went at night, it was pretty cool.

And on the right is the three of us on the night safari truck. We got stuck in the mud that night and had to have another truck come pick us up. It was so amazing to be out in the wild - the sky was so clear you could see more stars than I ever knew existed!

N'Jaya

From Mvuu Camp, we went north to Nkata Bay which is located right on the lake. N'Jaya is the name of the resort that we stayed at and it was also fantastic! I was sick and managed to sunburn myself on top of that so it was hard to appreciate the beauty of the place.

On the left is a picture of our 'chalet' which was a step up from the bamboo hut that we spent the first night in. This had a bathroom attached and there were beds with mosquito nets so it was a nice treat for us.

And this is the three of us on a balcony overlooking the lake. You can't really see it here, but above the lake and below the horizon is the other side of the lake - which is Mozambique.

Enyezini

From Nkata Bay we went to Melanie's village of Enyezini. This was the leg of the trip where my shoes were stolen :) We only had time to spend one night there but I'm happy that we could get to her little town. Melanie taught Biology to high school students for two years here.

On the left is Melanie's house, a small four room place with a kitchen and latrine separate out back. And on the right is some of the scenery that we saw on our walk back to the main road. It was a long 15km walk to the nearest road and we caught a ride there to Mzuzu where we could catch a bus back to Lilongue (the capitol). The two weeks had flown right by but it was time to go! On to England...
