Chapter 3

My shift was until 6:00pm. Finally when that time came, I was happy to leave. It had been a long day.

"Later, Andrew. I'm off," I said with a wave.

"Wait up," he said as he ran over to me. "You wanna have dinner with me tonight?"

"Oh, I'd love to. But I'm really tired. I think I'm just gonna go home and crash. Maybe tomorrow night though."

"Ok, well lemme have your number so I can call you."

"Ok." I wrote my number on a piece of paper and handed it to him.

"Later."

"Later." I left and walked out to my car.

When I got home, I noticed the lights were on in my house. It couldn't be my parents because they weren't supposed to be home until late tomorrow night. When I reached the door, I opened it cautiously. I went into the kitchen and saw on the table, dinner.

"SURPRISE!!" Brian and Kevin yelled as the jumped out.

"Aahhh!" I screamed. "You guys scared me. What are you doing here?"

"We wanted to surprise you," Kevin said.

"Aw, thanks guys... but for what?"

"Um... just because. Do we really need a reason?" Brian said.

"No, I guess not."

"We made your favorite," Kevin said as he pointed to the table.

"Thanks. You guys are so kind to me." I gave them both a hug. Then we all sat down at the table.

"So, how was your lunch date with Andrew?" Brian asked.

"Good. He doesn't like you guys too much though," I said trying to fool them.

"Yeah, he's probably scared of us," Kevin responded.

"Nope, he thinks you guys are a couple of wimps," I said with a laugh.

"Well, maybe we'll just show him how wimpy we are," Brian said acting tough.

"I'm just kiddin' guys. Man, you take me too seriously sometimes," I said smiling.

"So what school does he go to?" Kevin asked.

"He's going to the college."

"He's older?"

"Yeah. Is that a problem, dad?"

"Hey, I'm just watching out for you."

"I told you last night that I don't need watching out for. I can take care of myself."

"Ok, ok, chill." There was a tense pause in our conversation. We were starting to argue, and we never argued.

"I'm sorry, Kev. Don't be mad. I understand that you're watching out for me. And I do appreciate it. But I really don't need you to look out for me. Ok?" I said with sincerity.

"Ok, I'll back off some then."

"Thanks." I paused. "So what did you guys do after I kicked you out of the store?"

"Ok, nothing. We just walked around the mall," Brian responded.

"Oh, that's all?"

"Yep."

"So, Kev, how long are you staying for?"

"Probably the whole summer. And I'm thinking about going to college here next year."

"Really? That's great! Then we'll all be going to college together. And we could hang out more. That would be so cool."

"Yep," Kevin said with a smile. We soon finished eating our dinners.

"That was delicious guys. Thanks so much for making me dinner," I said as I started to clear the table.

"Your welcome," said Brian. He stood up with his plate and walked it over to the sink.

"Just leave them in the sink and I'll wash them tomorrow. I'm so tired right now that I don't think I'll even make it upstairs."

"We should leave then. We don't want to keep you up late like we did last night. Do you need us to do anything before we go?" Kevin said.

"No, I think I'll be ok."

"Ok, g'night then," Kevin said.

"Night," I responded. "Night Brian."

"Night." I followed them to the door. When they closed it, I locked it. I turned off the lights in the kitchen and went upstairs to go to bed.

When I woke up the next morning, I felt like I had a second energy. I got ready quickly and was off to work again. When I got there to work, Andrew was there.

"Hey," I said when I walked into the store.

"Hey," Andrew responded. Time went by fast that morning. Soon it was my lunch break.

"I asked the boss if we could have a longer break today. I made a picnic lunch. Would you like to join me?"

"Sure, I'd love to." When our lunch break came, Andrew and I went out to his car. He drove out to a field. We had lunch and talked.

"Thanks. It was good," I said as I finished my sandwich.

"Your welcome," Andrew said. I smiled at him. He leaned towards me. And I leaned in towards him. Our lips met and we kissed. When our lips parted, I wished they hadn't.

"I'm sorry," Andrew said.

"No that's ok. I liked it," I responded with a smile.
