The next couple of days the officers followed me around everywhere. To class, to my dorm room when I needed to pick up some things, to Brian's dorm to study, everywhere. It's not that I didn't want the protection, it's just that I never really had time to myself. But it made Kevin feel better that they were with me all the time. And there had been no word from Andrew.
One evening the officers were driving me back to Kevin's apartment from Brian's dorm. When they had walked me upstairs to the apartment, Kevin told them they could have the rest of the night off. But since the officers weren't allowed to take a night off, they just went to the diner across the street instead of waiting directly outside in their car.
When Kevin and I walked back into the apartment, I noticed that all the lights were out. And at the table there were candles lit and the table was set for two. It was a very romantic setting.
"What is this?" I asked, turning to Kevin.
"It's dinner. I thought that with everything that has been going on, you needed a way to relax. So I decided to make you your favorite dinner," Kevin answered, smiling. He walked over to the table and pulled out one of the chairs. So I walked over and sat down in it. He then served dinner.
"Thank you, Kevin. It was delicious. It was really nice of you," I said, once we were finishing up our dinner.
"Anything for my girl," he responded.
"Why are you so good to me?"
He didn't answer. He just sat there with this look in his eyes that he had to tell me something.
"Kevin? Is something wrong?" I questioned.
He took my hand into his. "Amanda, I think there's something I should tell you," he started.
"Ok."
"Now, this is going to be hard for me. So let me finish before you say anything." He paused, and I nodded. "Amanda, I love you. Not just like a friend, but more than that. A lot more. I guess I've loved you from the beginning. I just never realized how much I loved you until you got into that relationship with Andrew. I just couldn't stand to see what he was doing to you."
I didn't know what to say. I felt my eyes start to tear up.
"I just wanted you to know that," Kevin said.
"I need time to think, Kevin," I said, standing up from my chair. "I just need time to think." I began to walk towards the door.
"Amanda, don't," Kevin said. "Please don't leave."
"I just need to think." I grabbed my coat and headed for the door. "I'm just gonna take a walk." I walked out the door and down the hall.
"Amanda, wait. Please," Kevin yelled after me down the hallway. But I just kept walking.
