Chapter 16

Waking up in another room, I saw Kevin sitting beside the bed.

"Kevin?" I said softly.

He sat up in the chair and moved closer to the bed. "How are you feeling?"

"Ok, I suppose. What happened?"

"Andrew shot you. Then I brought you here, to the hospital."

"Where is he now?"

"He got away. The lights went out. And when they came back on he was gone. I didn't go after him because, well..." he trailed off. There was a brief silence then a doctor walked into the room.

"Well, I see you're awake. How are you feeling, Amanda?" the doctor said.

"Ok, I guess," I responded.

"I'm Dr. Stantor. We removed the bullet."

"Is she going to be alright?" Kevin asked.

"Yeah, she should be fine."

"So, we can leave?"

"I'd like for her to stay here over night. To keep a watch on her."

"Ok."

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some other patients to check on."

"Thanks, Dr. Stantor." The doctor left, leaving Kevin and I alone.

"Kevin, where's Brian?" I asked.

"Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about him." Kevin looked at his watch.

"The concert should be over by now, so he should be home. I'll go call him. I'll be right back." After standing up, Kevin gently pushed back my bangs with his hand and kissed my forehead. Then he walked out the door and down the hall.

It surprised me when he kissed my forehead. He'd never done that before, it wasn't really like him. I was usually the one that gave him a friendly peck on the cheek. But that didn't seem like it was friendly either. It felt like something more. Was he trying to tell me something? If he was, I didn't really want to say anything.

The door opened and Kevin walked in. "Brian said he's coming right over."

Kevin smiled at me and sat down in the chair again that was next to the bed.

"Did he say anything about the concert?"

"No, I just told him that you were here. Then he said he'd be right over. He hung up after that." He looked at me with such love and passion in his eyes.

"Kevin, I want to thank you for bringing me here."

"I'm just glad I wasn't too late."

There was a knock on the door and a police officer proceeded to walk in.

"Hello, I'm detective Edmunston," he said, introducing himself. "I'd like to ask you some questions about what happened this evening." Kevin looked at me for approval, and I gave him a slight nod.

"Alright," Kevin answered for the both of us.

"Who did this? What was his name?" he asked.

"Andrew Scott."

"What relation does he have to either of you?"

"He's her ex-boyfriend."

"Do you have a picture of him?" he asked, looking at me.

"Not with me, of course. I probably have one at my dorm," I answered.

"Now where did this happen?"

"His apartment," Kevin continued.

"Amanda, how did you get to his apartment?"

"I was getting ready for a concert that I was performing in tonight. There was a knock at the door. When I opened it, there was Andrew with a gun. Then he took me back to his apartment," I said.

"Did he say he was going to hurt you?"

"If I screamed or tried to escape, he said he would."

"Kevin, how did you know she was there?"

"I looked everywhere else. And I figured that's where she would be...," he answered. "Sir, may I talk to you outside?"

"Sure," the detective responded, then he headed for the door.

"Kevin, what are you going to tell him?" I asked.

"Don't worry, Amanda, everything will be alright," he told me. Then he walked outside to detective Edmunston, closing the door behind him.
