"Sir, I know Amanda wouldn't want me to tell you this. But Andrew, he beat her. I know she wouldn't have missed her performance for just about anything. So I figured she would be at his apartment," Kevin said. Kevin told detective Edmunston what happened at Andrew's apartment.
Kevin walked back into the room alone. "Detective Edmunston said he was going to file a report," Kevin said after sitting down in the chair.
"What did you tell him, Kevin?" I asked.
"What happened at the apartment."
"Is that all?"
"Yes."
There was a knock on the door and Brian walked in.
"Amanda, how ya feelin'?" Brian asked, sitting down in the chair on the opposite side of the bed from Kevin.
"Better than before," I responded.
"That's good."
"The doctor wants her to stay here overnight," Kevin started. "I'm going to stay here tonight with her."
"Kevin, you don't have to do that. I'll be fine here," I said.
"I know, but I want to. And I don't have any classes 'til the afternoon."
"Kevin, you really don't have to."
"I am, and there's no more arguing about it, ok?"
"Fine." I paused. "Brian, how'd it go?"
"How'd what go?" he asked.
"The performance."
"Good. But that's not important right now. You should get some rest."
"Yeah, Brian's right. Close your eyes and try to get some sleep," Kevin suggested.
"I'll stop by tomorrow and see you."
"Ok," I said.
"I'm gonna go now. I have an early class," Brian said, standing up.
"Brian, thanks for coming. I appreciate it."
"No problem."
"I'll walk you out, Brian," Kevin said, standing up and walking out with Brian.
"Brian, Andrew got away," Kevin started, once they were out in the hallway. "Find him, ask around, do what you gotta do. Just find him."
"Ok, Kev. I'll find him," Brian responded. Brian put his hand on Kevin's shoulder. "Don't worry. You just take care of Amanda." Then Brian walked down the hall to leave.
Kevin returned to the room and closed the door behind him. He again returned to the chair. He took my hand in his.
"Close your eyes and go to sleep," Kevin said, kissing my hand.
I closed them and soon fell asleep. Kevin fell asleep in the chair beside me. He stayed there all night, never letting go of my hand.
