Richard Dean Anderson
Birthday: 01-23-1950
Location of birth: Minneapolis, Minnesota

O'Neill came out of retirement to lead the mission to Abydos in the original Stargate film. The mission was to secure any threat on the other side and then destroy the gate.

As a result of the destruction of Ra, a system Lord, the threat was perhaps on the face of it - neutralised. Stargate SG-1 sees the welcome return of O'Neill heading up a new squad to return to Abydos to investigate the capture of a female soldier from Earth.

Colonel O'Neill's assignment at the SGC is to defend Earth from possible hostile invasion, and to explore new worlds and return new technologies to Earth for study and further development. He received previous special training in covert operations/infiltration, special weapons and tactics, demolition, chemical weapons, and is a field expedience specialist.

Over the series the character of O'Neill has developed and Jack has proved on many occasion a worthy colleague in the protection of our race.

Amanda Tapping
Birthday: ??-??-19??
Location of birth: Rochford, England

A character not in the original, Major Sam Carter has proven her knowledge of the gate and has much in common with Daniel Jackson; often they confer on ideas which O'Neill sees as too technical.

Major Carter's assignment is to ascertain possible hostile threats, to continue analysis of Stargate technology, and to analyse and return materials, technologies and knowledge for further development. She previously served as a flight officer in the Kuwait theatre, and has received special training in F-117/F16. She holds a Ph.D. in Quantum Mechanics and is a plasma/particle physics expert.

As an astrophysicist she has much involvement with the theoretical, often coming up with solutions to the most bizarre of puzzles. Proving an excellent team member, Samantha has gone through an awful lot whilst being a member of SG-1 including the news of her dad having cancer and having a Tok'Ra entity inside; the series has explored all of Sam's emotions to great depth and with excellent style.

Michael Garrett Shankes
Birthday: 12-15-1971
Location of birth: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Also enrolled on the very first mission in the Stargate movie, Dr Jackson's role was to decipher the meaning of the gate and as such the seventh symbol needed to make the device work.

Daniel had a large part in destroying Ra, in the process of saving his wife Sha'uri. When O'Neill returns to Abydos in Stargate SG-1, Sha'uri is captured by the new Enemy thus fueling Jackson into returning to earth to provide the necessary skills to help SG-1 complete the many missions ahead, and more personally to find his wife.

Dr. Jackson joined the SG-1 Team on a voluntary basis to study the cultures of other planets. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology as well as a Ph.D. in Linguistics, and has prior experience with the culture of Abydos.
The character of Dr Daniel Jackson has changed more dramatically over the series showing the more aggressive nature of his character and also the minute friction between himself and O'Neill.

Teal'c is a member of the Jaffa race, of the home planet Chulak. Similar to humans in overall appearance, Jaffas have an "X" shaped incision or marsupial pouch in the abdomen. Teal'c had served as the First Prime of the Goa'uld Apophis, but after aiding the SG-1 Team during their first mission to Chulak, he returned to Earth as a voluntary member of the SG-1 Team.

As Teal'c explained himself, many had come before to claim they would help in escape but SG-1 were the only ones he had ever believed.

Leaving his family behind, although re-visiting them later in Family, Teal'c had made a difficult decision which was recognised and was offered a position in SG-1, which he accepted. What Teal'c doesn't know about Goa'uld technology isn't worth knowing and consultancy over strange technologies is usually with Teal'c first. Not a character of many emotions and very unaware of human customs, he constantly learns the ways of Earth.

More recently Teal'c has been seen to smile more often, including Serpents Song with the capture of Apophis and more recently in One False Step when Daniel suggests everyone smile to show friendship, seeing Teal'c smile was really quite funny.
