Matthew 5:3  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is he kingdom of heaven:  The poor in spirit are those who have nothing. When they cannot put trust in things because of their destitute situation, they are ready to receive the kingdom. When we find ourselves helpless and empty, we find the only place to go is to God who fills our greatest need.

Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted:
Those who mourn are people that are burdened down with great sorrow. That sadness can be sorrow for sin, death or great suffering in the world.  The daily news of suffering throughout the world as well as people close to us causes us to look for a source of solace, and that is the God of all comfort.

Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth:  Some might say that meek describes someone with very little ambition and no back bone; one who never shows anger.  But a better definition might be those who have strength under control. There once was a great lady with a quite spirit who was the essence of meekness. However, when something important needed to be said or accomplished, she showed a strong determination to carry through. She was loved by all.
