Wen Rui An, Lovedrunk and Cappella Vocal Ensemble

Hi, all

Poetry sometimes can not be translated, but only interpreted through music. Come to reminisce Rumi's Lovedrunk from the 13th Century Persia on 6/11. I might miss the event. If any of you decides to go, RSVP with Sufi Books at 212-334-5212. Enjoy Rumi, WEAVE's Cappella Vocal Ensemble(5/31) and the following quote from Wen1 Rui4 An1. :)

Feifei

RUMI: Lovedrunk

"The lover is ever drunk with love... She is free, he is mad, she dances with ecstasy, he sings with delight." (Rumi) The resurgence and popularity of Rumi's poetry is an indication that the age of the Beloved is dawning for all humanity. In tonight's celebration, Shahram Shiva will perform his own English renditions of Rumi's verse, as well as the original Persian, accompanied by live music. He will also share remarkable stories of Rumi and his spiritual friend and beloved guide, Shams. Following the concert, Shiva will lead the group in an ecstatic whirling experience using his simple and unique four-step method.

Shahram Shiva is an award-winning Rumi translator and performer and has presented concerts & workshops for over ten years. His works include Rumi: Thief of Sleep, Hush Don't Say Anything to God: Passionate Poems of Rumi and the CD, Rumi: Lovedrunk.

A CONCERT WITH WEAVE: A Cappella Vocal Ensemble

The Spontaneous Search for a Modern Ritual

Many of the world's musical traditions arose from rhythms of work, travel, ceremony and prayer. Now,

when many of these rhythms have been transplanted, scattered or lost, how can we meet the immediate

need to connect-with ourselves, each other, our place, and the rhythms of our lives? Weave gives voice

to that question musically, in real time.

Weave: Timothy Hill, Marjorie Johnson, Rebecca Krause-Hardie & Seth Markel

Weave was formed in 1997. It includes current and former members of the Harmonic Choir, the first

group in the west devoted to a comprehensive exploration of harmonic singing, or overtone chant.

Their vocabulary is based on a shared knowledge of vocal traditions: American folk music and hymns,

Indian classical music, Medieval European sacred music and more. In their work, they seek to find the

direct impulse behind the song. A quartet of voices improvising a capella, music that has not been

heard before, nor will be heard again. Join us for this very special evening.

Saturday May 31 7:30 pm $15

Seating is limited.
