Getting away from the airport The international airport of Hawaii is located about 5 miles west of downtown Honolulu and about 9 miles from Waikiki. Honolulu is the state capital. Getting into Waikiki is very easy if traveling on one of the many package tours arrriving on Oahu everday. Most of these tours have stands and transport services waiting to take their customers into Waikiki. For those not on package tours getting to your destinationis also relatively easy. If you are traveling with only one piece of luggage you could take The Bus. Both #19 and #20 go into Honolulu and on to Waikiki ending up at Kapi'olani Park at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. There are several shuttle bus services such as The Waikiki Airport Express, which pick ups outside the main terminal building. If you are planning to return to the airport buy a round trip ticket. Return journeys need to be booked 24 hours in advance.
The Climate
The weather in Hawaii is great all year round with 30º plus temperatures for most of the year. As in any warm and sunny climate remember to apply plenty of sunscreen even if you are just strolling early in the morning. Nothing can spoil a great holiday, more than a case of sunburn. It does rain on Oahu but the amount depends on where you are on the island. It is usually wetter the higher up you go. It might be dry in Waikiki but it can be raining up in the Manoa Valley. The rain doesn't usually last long and there can be some memorable rainbows. It is a good idea to pack light, you can pick up an Aloha shirt or Hawaiian print dress easily. To buy Aloha wear head to Hilo Hattie's at the Ala Moana Center or the Hilo Hattie's main store on the Nimitz highway. A free shopping trolley / shuttle goes out to the main store every 20 minutes with pick ups all around Waikiki.
