Illinois 16 spans just about the whole state running east-west from a point just across the Illinois River from Hardin in Calhoun County, to Paris, which is less than 10 miles from the Indiana border. For a state route, it is extremely important.

Intersections from east to west:

IL16 begins atIL1/US150 at Paris, with a multiplex with IL133

IL49 joins from the south at Kansas (the town)

IL49 leaves toward the north

IL130 at Charleston

I-57

US45 at Mattoon

IL32 joins from the north at Windsor

IL32 leaves toward the south

IL128 joins from the north at Shelbyville

IL128 leaves south

US51 joins from the north

IL29 at Pana

US51 leaves south at Pana

IL127 joins from the south at Hillsboro

IL127 breaks off toward the north

I-55 at Litchfield

IL4 follows IL16 coming from the north

IL4 leaves south at Gillespie

IL159 at Royal Lakes

IL111

US67 at Jerseyville

IL100 north

Then IL16 ends at the Illinois River along IL100.

It passes through these towns: Paris, Kansas, Ashmore, Charleston, Mattoon, Gays, Windsor, Shelbyville, Tower Hill, Pana, Nokomis, Witt, Schram City, Hillsboro, Litchfield, Gillespie, Royal Lakes, Shipman, Jerseyville, Fieldon, Hardin.
