About the use of eggs, bunnies, and the name Easter.

I have seen a lot on the net lately about it being wrong to use the traditional symbols, and the name Easter, for celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Here is what I think about all this.

Bunnies and Eggs
I grew up coloring eggs, and getting a basket from "the Easter bunny". (we knew that my parents gave us the baskets, we didn't believe there was really a big bunny giving baskets and hiding eggs) Now everyone thinks it is wrong to use these symbols. I understand the reasoning, sort of. A lot of people think that, because they were used for symbols of some fertility goddess a long time ago, now it's wrong to use them for Easter. When I was growing up, my parents told us that eggs and bunnies were symbols of new life. The new life that Jesus Christ had when he rose from the grave, and the new life that was given to all mankind because of the sacrifice of the Lamb of God. I think that when eggs and bunnies are used with this view, there is nothing wrong with using these as a part of your Easter celebration. I do think it is important for the eggs and bunnies to take a back seat to what we are really celebrating. (for christians, lambs and crosses are more important symbols to use in decorating) As long as you are focused on what Easter really means, I don't see the harm in letting your children hunt for Easter eggs and giving them a basket from "the Easter bunny".

The Name Easter
I have also been hearing that it is wrong to call this holiday, Easter. Everyone says that the holiday Easter was a holiday celebrating a fertility goddess named Ishtar (or something like that) It was just a coincidence that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was celebrated at the same time. So since Easter is really the name of some pagen goddess, it shouldn't be used when talking about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I can understand why some would object to this, even more than someone objecting to bunnies and eggs. However, through the years the meaning of the name has changed. When I think of the word Easter, I think of Jesus, and his victory over death. I am sure it is the same with a lot of other people. In fact, when I looked up the word, Easter, in the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, I read this definition.
Easter - An important religious festival among Christians; it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus after his Crucifixion. Easter is celebrated on a Sunday in spring, and the season of Easter, a time of rejoicing, continues for several weeks. The penitential season of Lent is a time of preparation of Easter.
While I understand why some would choose to call this holiday something else, I personally feel it's not wrong to call it Easter.
