Kelley Planning and Educational Services, in cooperation with the University of Hawaii, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Hawaii Community Colleges, and Brigham Young University-Hawaii, invites you to participate in the third annual conference of the Kelley International Conference Series.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dr. Randy L. Swing serves as Co-Director of the Policy Center on the First Year of College funded by grants from The Atlantic Philanthropies and The Pew Charitable Trusts and located at Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina. The Policy Center develops new assessment instruments and nationally disseminates first college year assessment techniques. Dr. Swing and his colleagues are currently developing a posttest to the CIRP Freshman Survey, pilot testing a new benchmarking survey of first-year seminars, exploring technology-assisted focus group methods, documenting current practices in first year programs, and developing extensive web-based assessment resources. Dr. Swing is also a fellow of the National Resource Center for The First Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

Dr. Larry H. Kelley, Executive Director of the Consortium for Assessment and Planning Support (CAPS), will conduct a pre-conference workshop entitled "Embedding Assessment Measures In Regularly Scheduled Assignments: A User-Friendly Approach." During this half day workshop, Dr. Kelley will present a comprehensive overview of an innovative course embedded assessment process, examples of course embedded assessment techniques/procedures, advantages of this type of assessment, development of program assessment plans, and suggestions for integrating these plans into the overall assessment process. Participants will work in small groups to utilize the model presented in this workshop to develop program assessment plans and to evaluate samples of actual student work using course embedded assessment techniques. CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The proposal may be on any subject dealing with institutional research, planning and/or assessment in higher education, from course level work to projects at the system or state level. First, the proposal should consist of a title page, which includes the title of the presentation and information on the presenter (name, title, campus and e-mail addresses, phone numbers, etc.). Second, a short presentation summary of two pages or less should be attached. This summary should give a brief description of the presentation, identify the target audience, explain what participants should gain from the session, and describe your room setup/audio visual needs. Third, a brief abstract of the presentation (100 words or less) should be included for the conference program. Proposals are being accepted for 45-minute paper presentations and 75-minute interactive sessions.

Please send your presentation proposal(s) via e-mail attachment to (aukelley@aol.com) or (irkelley@ulm.edu). The deadline for submitting a proposal is November 1, 2001.

CONFERENCE HOTEL

The Ala Moana will serve as the conference hotel. The nightly room rate will be $105 + tax for a single or double for the group dates of May 22-30. Subject to availability, this special conference rate will also be honored three (3) nights prior to and three (3) nights after the group dates listed above. The conference registration fee is $250. This will entitle you to a binder with the conference program and other information, attendance in all plenary and breakout sessions, the opening reception, three breakfasts and four lunches. The registration fee for the pre-conference workshop is $50.
