Erosion is the process whereby the energy of the moving water in a river and the load it carries erode or remove materials such as rocks and soil from the bed and banks of the river.  

It is usually a slow and gradual process that occurs over the course of thousands or millions of years. However, the rate of erosion can be speeded up by human activities such as mining.
