Although many people think Disco began in the 1970's, it actually began during the 1950's in the "Peppermint Lounge" in Paris, France where Disc Jockeys began to provide music for many clubs. Disco music is designed to make people move and have fun on the dance floor and while it remains one of t-h-e most maligned of all musical genres, it is a music that simply refuses to die and continually returns with new names like techno, rave or even jungle music.

What is a Disco and how is Hustle danced?

Disco music's driving beat has a hypnotic feel that makes you want to dance or at least stomp your feet to the beat. In 1978, the film "Saturday Night Fever" starring John Travolta gave birth to the   global phenomena that disco dancing has become. Hustle is danced to the   contemporary pop dance music of the last 20 years. It is a fast, smooth dance,   with the lady spinning almost constantly, while her partner draws her close and   sends her away.

Origins of Disco Hustle

Most of disco dancing has strong roots in Swing, Samba,   ChaChaCha, Mambo, Merengue, Fox Trot and Tango. The Hustle is believed to   have originated in New York in 1970. It went through many variations during the   1970's, with line dances for groups of people, solo movements that came and   went, and partnership dances. These partnership dances included the Basic,   Hustle, Latin, Spanish, Tango Hustle and the most popular Street, Three-Count   or Swing Hustle that originated in California as the Street Hustle by skaters in   Venice and Malibu. John Travolta and "Saturday Night Fever" made dancing,   the "in" thing for many people, especially men.

Popular disco music of the 70's included The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive", "Night Fever", "More than a Woman", "Everybody Dance" (Chic) and
Donna Summer's "Love to love you Baby".
