Step 7 - Inserting Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks are a navigation mechanism that provides the capability to move from one section of a web page to another, to another web page, or to another web server.

Hyperlinks that provide navigation within a web page are called internal links. Internal links are created with bookmarks and the hyperlinking tool.

Hyperlinks that address other web pages or web sites are external links. External links to other web sites require an absolute address. An example of an absolute address is http://www.google.com.

Hyperlinks that link web pages on the same web server may use relative addressing. An example of a relative address is /images/my-page.html. The advantage in using relative addressing is that you can move a web site from one location to another without have to change all of the web page references.

Our web site example will use relative addressing.

To insert a hyperlink highlight the word or works where you want your hyperlink to appear. Go to the menu bar and:

  1. Choose insert
  2. Then choose hyperlink.
  3. An Insert Hyperlink dialog window will appear.
  4. Click option labeled Existing file or Web Page.
  5. Type in the complete address (URL) of the web page or site you want to reference. The address must be entered correctly and in the correct format.
  6. Alternatively, you may select a web address from recently visited sites in the list window.

Here is important to note that in our demonstration web site there are twelve pages. Each page has a unique name. For example our main page is name “index.doc” When we save this as a web page a new file will be created and name “index.htm.” When inserting hyperlinks in your Word document files it is best to use the web page file name rather than inserting the hyperlinks after you have created your web pages. For example, the file name for the first tutorial pages is named “get-start.doc.” This page will be name “get-start,htm” after it is save as a web page. Use this name for your hyperlink. You need only to enter “get-start.htm” as the web page address in the hyperlink dialog window.
