News from Washington, D.C.

Congress decided to extend tax incentives for conservation easements. Efforts to make the incentives permanent have not yet passed, so for those interested in retaining ownership while conserving natural features of their property, 2010 may be the time to do it. Tax incentives include a deduction of up to 50% of adjusted gross income in any year (up from 30%) and the possibility of carrying over unused portions of deductions for as long as 15 years (up from 5 years) after the initial year in which the deduction was claimed.
