Retiring Board Members

Jim Conley and Armando Sardanopoli were both recognized for the completion of 3 consecutive 3year terms serving as a director. That's nine years of wonderful dedication to helping preserve the natural areas on Grosse Ile. The Nature Area appeared to be Jim's true love but he was also an active volunteer who could be depended upon to help at clean-ups, tree plantings and other stewardship events. Over the years Armando served as Vice President and Secretary and was active with Fundraising, Stewardship and the Nature Area.

Pete Rock was recognized for 7 years of service as a board member. Pete jumped into service on the board as Treasurer in 2003 and was active with Stewardship projects, the Nature Area and the Education Committee.

Margarete Hasserodt was recognized for her 6 most recent consecutive years on the board. The Nature Area was like a second home for her and she labored there with great love and enthusiasm. Margarete has also been an invaluable member of the Education Committee and been very involved with special projects like the Intrepid Pond restoration and event planning like Earth Day and our annual meeting.
We hope all four "retiring" board members continue to serve as active volunteers.

Board Members Elected

Board members Terry Laesser and Bruce Jones were elected to new three year terms on the board. In addition, four new board members were elected to serve three year terms.

Board Member Profiles
Meet two of our newest board members

Henry Su moved to Grosse Ile in June, 2009 and is currently working for BASF Corporation in Wyandotte. Henry grew up in Somers, NY, and received his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry. He spent the last three years living and working in Basel, Switzerland.

Henry enjoys playing sports, in particular basketball, baseball, and football. On occasion, you may see him running on the nature trails around town. As the weather got colder, he turned his attention indoors, to playing the piano.

Henry looks forward to participating on the board and in activities of the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy.

Since the age of five, Carol Morse has been on Grosse Ile. She attended Kindergarten in the former 1911 building. Her husband, Dave, an avid birder, along with sons, Bruce and Bob, have enjoyed the wonderful natural resources which abound here - especially the woods and water. Building forts and tree houses in the woods, ice skating on the canal and boating in the surrounding waters have been enjoyable experiences for her family.

Carol believes that participation in GINLC will foster a sense of stewardship of our resources. She has been a tutor for the Downriver Literacy Council which serves southwest Detroit to Grosse Ile, a ship-board teacher for the Great Lakes Education Program, which educates fifth grade students about the aquatic environment, a member of the Township Natural Resources Committee, and a tennis and boating enthusiast.
