Fungal reproduction

  • Asexual spores: (Not sexual) arise from one cell only.
  • Sexual spores: result from the fusion of nuclei from two cells.
  • Fungi may reproduce asexually, sexually or both ways.

Asexual reproduction:

  • Yeast budding
    1. Large cell forms a small bud (outgrowth)
    2. Bud gradually increases in size
    3. The nucleus of the parent cell divides (by mitosis) and one daughter nucleus migrates into the bud
    4. The bud completely separates from the parent cell
  • Fission
simple division of a cell into two daughter cells
  • Asexual spores (conidia) are formed by mitosis in or on specialized hypha

Sexual reproduction:

  • Fusion of two haploid nuclei forming transient diploid and then division by meiosis (reduction division) producing sexual spores (Ascospores)
