Nutrition and growth of pathogenic fungi

Nutrition:

  • Fungi obtain their nutrients by absorption
They secrete enzymes that breakdown the organic material then fungal cells absorb the nutrients through their cell walls.
  • Fungi may live as
    1. Saprophytes on dead, decaying organic matter, or
    2. Parasites on living organisms.

Growth:

  1. Yeast growth:
    • Budding
    • Germ Tubes
in dimorphic fungi, yeast cells can also form germ tubes and then hyphae
  2. Mould growth:
moulds grow by elongation at the tips of their hyphae.
