Teen Page

I made this page because us old fogies worry about you youngsters! It's all about making good decisions. We tell you what the right decisions are hoping you will not make the wrong ones instead because we care about you!

I would like to recommend a GREAT book that I just read recently. Ideally, I probably should have read this book between 14 and 16 years old. It's called:

Guide for Catholic Young Women: Especially Those who Earn Their Own Living by: George Deshon.

It is available for FREE as a download-able book from Google!

Why is Chastity Important?

Chastity is a virtue, not something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. However, NOT being chaste is something to be ashamed of. Virginity is a gift from God. Losing virginity before marriage is a serious sin which must be confessed to a priest in order to receive forgiveness from God. In addition, pretty much everything else you can think of with the exception of "peck" kisses are also serious sins which should be confessed as soon as possible.

Besides the sinfulness of these actions, there are several additional reasons why we should maintain our purity until marriage. These include the risks involved with these behaviors. There are several sexually transmitted diseases which are very common among young people. Everybody thinks that it will not happen to them, but it does happen to a lot of people so you very well could be one of them. These diseases include: HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, Warts, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Herpes, Trichomonas, and Gonorrhea as well as many others. Some of these diseases (HIV/AIDS, Warts, Herpes) currently have no cure. Symptoms may go away for a while, sometimes even years, but the virus stays in your body FOREVER.

In addition, there is no form of birth control that is 100 percent effective. There is always the chance of becoming pregnant. Becoming pregnant at a young age puts a lot of stress on a relationship/person. In addition, you can still catch STDs (including HIV) while using a condom. Some say that smart people use condoms, but in reality SMART PEOPLE ABSTAIN.

So, PLEASE.... from old fogie to anxious young person, please protect your chastity!

LYRICS
Young boy, Young girl
From Angela’s “Come Follow Me”

The party’s over, the lights are down
Everyone else has gone home
He moves closer, and she don’t mind
Love comes easy when you’re all alone
Heartbeats racin’ to the finish line
They don’t wanna slow down
I know the passion when it seems like you’ve waited forever

Young boy, young girl
Hold on, be strong tonight
Young boy, young girl
True lovers respect each other
Well it ain’t easy , but please believe me
There’s all the time in the world
Young boy, young girl

She still remembers that August night
She was lonely, he was seventeen
They held each other in his Daddy’s car
As they parked by the Dairy Queen

They knew emotion wasn’t on their side
She must have prayed, “Slow me down!”
Because she pulled back and told him:
“I don’t wanna regret it forever”

Chorus

(Young boy) it may wreck your night, but
Young girl (young boy) hey what about your life
Well, it’s really not my business, but with your forgiveness
Please don’t give into the world – young boy, young girl

Heartbeats racin’ to the finish line
They don’t wanna slow down
I know the passion when it seems like you’ve waited forever
Like you’ve waited forever

Chorus

Respect each other, love each other
Respect each other, help each other

The Importance of Respectful Dress

Another prominent issue among teens in today's society is clothing. It is now "the style" to show as much skin as possible. It is important to keep in mind that our bodies were made in God's image. Therefore, we should respect ourselves like we would respect God Himself. Showing disrespect to ourselves is, in fact, showing disrespect to God. For women in particular, dressing immodestly portrays yourself as an object to be used rather than a person to be respected.

Included are clothes which are revealing either because of how they are cut or because they are extremely tight-fitting. Both of these can help lead us to unchaste lifestyles. One idea that may help us to avoid wearing clothes that are "over the edge" is wearing the scapular. Not only has Mary promised us salvation by wearing the brown scapular, but it can also serve as a reminder for us. Personally, I use the scapular to determine whether or not a shirt is cut too low. If I am afraid of the scapular showing, I know that the shirt is too revealing. Also, if clothes are not comfortable, they are probably too tight. It is not normal for clothes to be extremely uncomfortable.

The best examples of all that we have to follow are of Jesus and Mary. If you don't think they could ever wear a certain article of clothing, we probably should not be wearing it either.

Drugs and Alcohol are Bad News!

There are several reasons why teens should not drink alcohol or do drugs besides the obvious one being that it is illegal. All drugs and alcohol impair one's ability to think rationally. In a time in your life when making decisions could mean life or death, it is imperitive that you have your wits about you. People do things that are completely out of character when they are under the influence of chemicals and at times it can be very dangerous.

Just because something is accepted by society, or if it seems that everyone else is doing it, doesn't mean that it is ok. The truth is that NOT everyone is doing it. In addition, it happens very commonly that people regret later something they did while drunk or drugged. This is why us old fogies have to give you the heads up on these things. So, please say NO to drugs and alcohol. And, please please please.... don't drive if you do give in to these temptations! Thank you!

A Good Poem

I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom
So I had a sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right,
The party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mom
Something I expected least.

Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mom, his voice seems far away.

My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
This girl is going to die.

I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive,
Now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.

Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
Tell daddy to be brave,
And when I go to heaven,
Put Daddy's Girl on my grave.

Someone should have taught him,
That it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mom
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And I'm so unprepared.

I wish that you could hold me Mom,
As I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say, "I love you, Mom!"
So I love you and good-bye.

Making it Work

Yeah, yeah... I know that all of this is easier said than done. And, being an old fogie I'm not under the same pressures as you youngsters, but I'm telling you that this can work. One huge thing that makes this very "do-able" is to hang out with people that share your same values. This way, the chances you will be pressured to do something you don't feel comfortable with are decreased.

The best help you have is Jesus. Pray to Him. Pray often. Talk to God every night and every morning and whenever you are struggling with something. He will always be there for you. If you're in a tight situation, being pressured into something, pray for His help. He will help you out of it.

See my Catholic Page for tips, prayers, and information!

Another Great Poem...

If Jesus came to your home to spend a day or two -
If He came unexpectedly, I wonder what you'd do.
Oh, I know you'd give your nicest room to such an honored guest,
and all the food you'd serve Him would be the very best,
and you would keep assuring Him you're glad to have Him there -
That serving Him in your home is a joy beyond compare.

But when you saw Him coming would you meet Him at the door
with arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly Visitor?
Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in,
or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they'd been?
Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn't heard,
And wish you hadn't uttered that last loud, hasty word?

Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out?
Would you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about?
I wonder if the Savior spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing the things you always do?
Would you go right on saying the things you always say?
Would life for you continue as it does from day to day?

Would your family's conversation keep its usual pace,
and would you find it hard each meal to say table grace?
Would you sing songs you always sing, and read the books you read,
and let Him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed?
Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you'd planned to go,
Or would you, maybe, change your plans for just a day or so?

Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends,
Or would you hope they'd stay away until His visit ends?
Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on,
Or would you sigh with great relief when He as last was gone?
It might be interesting to know the things that you would do
If Jesus came in person to spend some time with you.

A Prayer For Our Young People

God our Father, You see Your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world.
Show them that Your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following You is better than chasing after selfish goals.
Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start.
Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
