This health and prevention-based presentation focuses on the strong cultural component of traditional storytelling, delightfully illustrated with the mystery of illusion. When communities embrace their traditional stories, they experience ancestral pride, cultural cohesiveness and improved self-esteem. These important elements are directly linked to the prevention of substance abuse and the enhancement of mental health.
The oral traditions provide a verbal history of tribal culture. These stories enhance self-esteem and pride within American Indian communities. Positive self-esteem is directly linked to the prevention of substance abuse and the enhancement of mental health. Since the human brain organizes, retains, and accesses information through story form, traditional stories are a powerful tool for prevention. When used as a dynamic model for positive behavior, traditional stories serve as lasting and effective guidelines for health, wellness, and prevention within the community group.
