When it comes to
countertops, your material choices are almost endless. From the economy
minded laminate to the discriminating buyer's granite. In between there's
Dupont Corian solid surfacing, soapstone, Dupont Zodiaq, and others. There
isn't a best material for countertops as most are temperature resistant.
There are exceptions of course but most of the high end countertop
materials will last much longer than anyone's lifetime.
Laminates have been around
for many years and for a long time was used almost exclusively by builders
to cover countertops.

Vermont Soapstone has been in business for
over 150 years. Not only do they sell soapstone, they mine it on-site as
well. Click on the above logo to visit their website on a new page.
Soapstone is the stone-of-choice for luxury
kitchen and bathroom installations. It is a metamorphic stone with a soft,
warm feel. It is resistant to chemicals, acid, water, and heat. In the
kitchen we've found no foods that will stain it. You may take hot pots off
the stove and sit them right on the stone without burning it. Light
sanding will remove most scratches. The stone has a blue, green, or gray
cast when mined. Once it is treated with mineral oil the color deepens to
its more typical rich, veined, charcoal gray.
