I love symmetry, symmetry in all aspects of my designs. Symmetrical designs costs less to design and to build, or manufacture. Since people are very symmetrical, vehicles are symmetrical, and consumer products are symmetrical it stands to reason that homes with the most amount of curb appeal would also be symmetrical. People in general love symmetry.

Symmetry simply means that what is on one side is also on the other side, or mirrored about the center!

Asymmetrical simply means that what is on one side is NOT also on the other side. An example would be a front door that is not centered on the front of the home.

I get a great deal of satisfaction from creating new residential designs. My favorite design is the one-story home simply because of the almost endless possibilities that are afforded by a single-story structure. Yes, I know, I too hated those seemingly lengthy narrow hallways of the typical ranch but the one-story design with the availability of new material technologies has changed all that. One-story designs are definitely the way to go if you want a truly functional and very affordable home.

The negative aspects to using a one-story residential design are:

bullet

large footprint floor plan needed to accommodate all of the adequate size rooms that are required for a family of four (three bedrooms)

bullet

larger than normal lot size needed to accommodate the residential plan (as opposed to say a two story cracker box plan

The positive aspects of a one-story residential design are:

bullet

allows the use of skylights in all rooms

bullet

less wasted space of all residential designs

bullet

allows for a very open floor plan

bullet

allows for more design possibilities

bullet

when slab or crawl space foundations are incorporated, there are no stairs to climb.

Basements - One of the questions that I am commonly being asked is whether or not I think a basement is a plus or a minus in a residence. Basements are one of the most economical areas of the building to construct since no matter what type of foundation (slab, crawl space, or basement) you choose, you will always need a footer for your foundation. The expense of a basement's walls (concrete block, poured, or other) is the cheapest method of increasing your home's living space. So the answer is that a basement will always be to your benefit and extremely cost effective, whether that space is only used for storage or for living space, the cost to build a basement is worth every penny!
