DESCRIPTION       Sunny Mission Beach - front view of Susnet Sands

Sunset Sands is a lovely 2 bedroom ocean front condominium located directly on beautiful Mission Beach in San Diego, California.  Mission Beach is a 2 block wide spit that separates the ocean from Mission Bay.  Mission Beach is a continuous 3 mile stretch of clean, soft sand.  And  Mission Bay is itself an incredible scenic water play land.

And all this is still only 5 minutes from Sea World, and 20 minutes from the airport, downtown, the zoo, La Jolla, and many other San Diego attractions. For those familiar with the Mission Beach area, we are about half way to historic Belmont amusement park to the south, and to Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach to the north.

Whether on a business trip or a vacation, you will never stay in a motel or hotel room again after staying here. You will find your experience away from home far more pleasant and satisfying at Sunset Sands.

The unit is comfortably and newly furnished in a classic contemporary style. It was designed with the ocean in mind. You have spectacular views from all the main living areas. And the master bedroom faces the ocean, featuring a large window ocean view. To make you feel at home, the vacation rental has 2 cable TV's, VCR's and a stereo system, as well as CD's, tapes, games, puzzles, magazines, and books.

The kitchen has all you need for cooking a gourmet meal to baking a pie. Serving for 8 is provided along with lots of sizes of pots and pans, storage bins, utensils, etc. One thing is for sure, if you are going to cook, you can't do without the big things or the little things. And we have them all!

Sunset Sands is located directly on 3 continuous miles of beautiful Mission Beach. The beach is large, not crowded and very clean. The surf is exhilarating to play in, with or without the boogie boards. And the sunsets are unforgettable.

Dream Sequence # ???
... Hey, wait a minute ! !. Pinch me! I am awake. This is not a dream. I am here at Sunset Sands and it is very real! It is a dream come true...
This really is...
Sunset Sands.

What To Wear California Grey whale watching - winter months

The Mission Bay community, and San Diego in general, is a casual place where casual dress prevails. Dress is not a worry here. You can wear the same clothes any time during the year.

Shorts and T-shirts are a must. A hat is important to prevent a sunburn. You will probably want sneakers to make all your walking comfortable. And sandals or rubber thongs are great for the beach and surf. Sweats are great for lounging around the unit, especially in the evening. After the sun goes down you will often need a light jacket or sweatshirt for outside.

What To Bring

The unit will have almost everything you will need for your stay - short of your clothes and personal items. All the linens, including beach towels, are provided. The kitchen has everything you will need for cooking and serving. There may be a few staples like sugar, and a few spices in the pantry, but you will need to stop at the local market or grocery store to buy your food items.

You might want to bring a telephone calling card or pre-paid phone card for long distance calls from the unit. Local calls are not charged, but you need a card for long distance calls.

There are books, puzzles, games, card decks, cassette tapes and CD's for you. But you should bring any of your favorites that you cannot live without. There will be a few of the essentials - like soap, coffee filters, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. - for you to get started. But you will need to buy or bring these items to use during your stay. By the way, you may want to bring binoculars for viewing the sights.

There are also a couple of boogie boards for you to use. And as mentioned earlier, call the management company if there is anything else that you need. One of the fun things about staying at Sunset Sands is how little luggage you need and how quickly you can settle in and feel at home!

BEDDING ARRANGEMENT

There are two bedroms in the unit. The bedding arrangements are: queen bed in the master bedrom (which faces the ocean with a large window), 2 twin beds in the second bedroom, and a queen-sized sofa sleeper couch in the living room. Six people is the maximum occupancy for the unit (by condo building HOA rules).

SUNSET SANDS INFORMATION BOOK

Our Sunset Sands Information Book contains a wealth of information to make you aware of all the resources available in Mission Beach and San Diego.  Also, everything you need to know about the Sunset Sands vacation rental unit is at your fingertips.  This will make your stay go smoothly.  Topics include:

Q.  Is the neighborhood safe?

A. Yes, the Mission Beach neighborhood is safe. As an elderly couple, or a family with kids you will feel immediately at ease when you arrive.
Back to FAQ

Q. What is the beach area like?

A. Each beach community in the San Diego area has its own personality. Mission Beach is known as "eclectic." It is a wonderful mix of all types of people. You will see couples holding hands, families with children of all ages, the elderly, teenage kids in the water, foreign travelers from Germany and Japan, "locals" visiting for the day from inland, etc., etc. Many people are there on vacation. And overall you will get the contagious feeling of fun and happiness!
Back to FAQ

Q. Do you take kids? Are there any other families who vacation around there?

A. Yes, children are welcome. And yes, many families vacation with their children in Mission Beach. There is nothing that will warm the heart like seeing these little ones playing in the surf with their sand castles, pails, and little floppy hats. You can always see lots of that.
Back to FAQ

Q. Is it noisy?

A. In and around the unit you will find that the beautiful sound of the ocean covers up most of the other sounds. And the neighbors on both sides are quiet. Occasionally, and mostly in the summer, you will hear some alley or board walk noise. You will sleep like a baby with the sound of the surf rolling in.
Back to FAQ

Q. What is the beach like? Rocky, or dangerous (glass)?

A. The beach is gorgeous soft sand. It is also very clean. Glass is never allowed on the beach, and that rule is strictly enforced. In addition there is some equipment that frequently rake the beach, filter the sand near the board walk, and sweep the boardwalk. You can walk on the sand with your bare feet (except in the summer at the hottest point of a sunny day).
Back to FAQ

Q. What is the ocean water temperature?

A. The water temperature is chilly. Many people do go in the water - especially the younger ones. And they say that "once you get used to it, it's fine." One option is to bring or rent (near the unit) a wetsuit. The water temperature gets is warmest during the September/October time frame.
Back to FAQ

Q. How crowded is the beach? How about right in front of the unit?

A. The beach is rarely crowded in front of the unit. Even in the peak summer season there is always room to spread your blanket out without someone right next to you. The main Pacific Beach area (about a mile north) and the Mission Beach area by the amusement park (about a mile to the south) are the only places that are crowded, and that is in the summer only. Those are the best places if you like to people watch!
Back to FAQ

Q. What floor of the building is the unit on, and why is this important?

A. The third floor of a 3-floor building. There is an elevator, and it is easy to just walk up the stairs. The third floor offers a perfect perspective for the best ocean (and dolphin) views. And you are high enough above any boardwalk pedestrians for privacy..
Back to FAQ

Q. Does the unit have air conditioning?

A. The unit does not have central or window air conditioning. This is not found very often in San Diego home near the beach. They would rarely or never be needed. At the beach there is a constant breeze coming in from the ocean to keep the unit cool. We have 3 fans and a ceiling fan in the second bedroom, but they are normally only used at times during the summer.
Back to FAQ

Q. Do you have a clothes washer/dryer?

A. The washer in dryer are not in the unit. But they are just a few steps away in the parking garage. They are both coin-operated. These are here if you want to wash any of your clothes or the condo's linens during your stay. But remember, you do NOT have to clean the linens provided with the unit before you leave. We clean all the linens after you leave (at no extra charge).
Back to FAQ

Q. Do I pay a deposit?

A. Yes. The management company takes care or that, as well as all other payment matters.  When you arrive and check-in, your card will be swiped - but not charged - at that time.  The deposit amount is $200.00.  The management team is professional, knowledgeable, and experienced. They will send you maps and other information in a packet after you make your booking. They will be your contact there to assist you in anything you need during your stay.
Back to FAQ

Q. Is there a cleaning fee?

A. There is no additional housekeeping fee. Cleaning is included in your rental fee. We ask that the unit be left reasonably clean and the dishes are washed and out of the dishwasher, You do not have to wash any linens either.
Back to FAQ

Q. Sould I ask you a "stupid" question?

A. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you want. As they say, there are no dumb questions. My wife and I may have been in your shoes - on your side of the fence. Just a few years ago we looked for a vacation rental here at Mission Beach. I had all the questions you had and more. For us, we just wanted to know about the area and the place before we plunked a bunch of money down. I know what it is like to go to a place "cold," so I have tried to include lots of pictures and information in my web site.
Back to FAQ

Q. What is the cancellation policy?

A. Cancellation of any nightly or weekly reservations prior to 90 days of arrival will be refunded your deposit, less the reservation fee and a $100 cancellation charge. A reservation cancelled 61 days prior to arrival will be charged $300 and forfeit the reservation fee. Any reservation cancelled within the 60 days prior to arrival will forfeit the entire amount of the reservation. NO refunds for early departure.

..
Back to FAQ

Q. Is the unit a non-smoking unit?

A. Yes, it is.

Back to FAQ

Q. Is there much airplane noise?

A. As far as airplane/jet noise goes, we have very little - virtually none. Sometimes a beach patrol helicopter goes past the unit down the shoreline. But there is a takeoff and landing pattern that takes planes right over South Mission Beach. It can really be quite bad at times down there. Fortunately, Sunset Sands is far enough north of that area to miss almost all of that. (And by the way, this is something that the South Mission rental units don't tell you, of course!).
Back to FAQ

Q. Where is the nearest grocery store?

A. The nearest huge, full-service grocery store is called Ralph's. It is located about a 4 or 5 minute drive and about a 15 minute walk from Sunset Sands. There are other specialty grocery stores within a mile or so as well. They include the wonderful Trader Joe's which has great prices on all sorts of gourmet and healthy food , and also Henry's which specializes in natural foods and has fabulous fresh fruits and veggies. My wife only goes to the normal grocery store (Ralph's) for the few items that she can't get at the other two stores. And if you are feeling desperate or lazy, there are two small markets that are just (literally) a few steps from the unit. They have quite a few things considering their small size.
Back to FAQ

Q. Does the balcony face the ocean?

A. Yes, the balcony directly faces the ocean with fabulous views. The short front wall of the balcony is made of Plexiglas so you can see through to the ocean wherever you are sitting (you will often find a solid wall at the front of the balcony at other units - not a good idea!). One wall is mirrored to also allow easy viewing.
Back to FAQ

Q. Are there any parking fees?

A. There is no parking fee. Your car is parked in a covered secure garage (this is a rare feature for Mission Beach rentals). There is one space allotted for you at the unit. If you will have visitors or expect using a 2nd car, you will need to park on the street (a short walk).
Back to FAQ

Q. Are the photos and the testimonials real?

All the photos on our web page are of my unit only, and were taken by my wife or I. (And also, all the sunset pictures were taken by us, and are not touched up!) And all the testimonials are real, too. They have come from feedback forms and the like from tenants that stayed at Sunset Sands.
Back to FAQ

Q. Do you have a pool?

A. We do not have a swimming pool. As far as I know, non of the vacation rental condos or homes in the area do have one. However, Belmont Park is home to The Plunge, a public Olympic-sized pool. The park and pool are about a 10 minute walk from Sunset Sands
Back to FAQ

Q. Are there restaurants nearby?

A. There is lots of casual dining in the area. It will take you many stays at Sunset Sands to explore all of the great eateries located within a mile or so of the unit. A well-known, well-established, and well-regarded seafood and steak restaurant is located about 100 steps from the unit. I have no trouble PROMISING you great dining experience while you are here. But don't forget some of the other wonderful restaurants San Diego has to offer, many of which are located within a 20 minute drive to the Gaslamp District (downtown), Seaport Village, etc.
Back to FAQ

Q. What is the mosquito and bug situation like there?

A. Amazingly, mosquitoes are rarely encountered at the beach. You can even leave the patio door open after dark without any bug-bother. Your may never go to Florida again!
Back to FAQ

Q. What is the booking procedure?

A. Please call or e-mail me to secure a reservation. My property manager will then call you and take care of all the booking, payment, and information details.
Back to FAQ

Q. Do you book by the week, or by the day?

A. We offer only Saturday to Saturday weekly bookings during the summer season, Memorial Day through Labor Day. During the other 9 months of the year we can provide daily bookings with a 2 day minimum. The non-summer bookings can start and end on any day of the week.
Back to FAQ

Birch Aquarium at Scripps: 20 - 25 minutes
Cabrillo National Monument: 20 - 25 minutes

Back to FAQ

Q. What rules are in effect on the beach? Can I ride my bike at the ocean edge at night, for example?

A. Yes you can ride the beach at night. The rules are as follows:

There are some other rules, and they are all posted clearly..
