DRUM TO DISC CONVERSION
Rear drum Rear disc after conversion

1990 Honda Civic Wagons Rule!!! This is not the easiest thing to do. So be warned and prepared and I’ll try help with the mistakes I made so you won’t have to. It does look nice and they feel good too. I’m not sure if I’d recommend them to anyone but if you insist on rear disc brakes for your wagon, I can’t blame you. Oh yeah, Fuck You Honda for not making the wagon with rear disc brakes. Now that that’s out of my system, let’s carry on.

Integra rear brakes/trailing arms

Here’s the 1993 Acura Integra 4 door rear assembly. I got it for $300 even. It includes the swaybar, trailing arms, rotors, calipers, brake lines, parking brake cables, upper and lower control arms, and compensator arm. The bad thing was that most of this assembly is absolutely useless to me. All you need is the disc brake assembly removed from the trailing arm and the parking brake cables. I made quite a few mistakes here. First off the trailing arm bushings were bad so I ordered some new polyurethane suspension bushings. You see it didn’t appear to me that the Integra trailing arms were shorter then the wagon’s. Here’s a side by side example. It’s so clear to me now but who knows what I was thinking when I did this.

Don't buy from BBK or Energy Suspension. BBK never answers their tech line. Energy suspension bushings suck and squeak. Get Prothane.

Prothane Bushing

You have to remove your trailing arm assembly from your wagon. When you do so do not remove the compensator arm toe adjustment bolt. That’s the bolt in the right corner of this photo. Otherwise you have to have an alignment after you complete the conversion. That is if you complete the conversion.

Compensator bolt

So you will need to take off the drum assembly from the wagon’s trailing arm by removing these evil hex head bolts. You can spray them with penetrating spray or whatever but plan on drilling out a few of them and replacing them with normal high grade bolts. I used the bolts that secure the backing plate on the drum assembly. You have to rip apart the drum assembly to get to them but you won’t be reusing anything in there anyway. So just cut the parking brake cable because trying to get that thing that secures it to the lever is also evil, just like the hex head bolt. Then you need a big socket and a breaker bar to break loose the last nut holding the hub on the trailing arm. Okay so that’s the easy part.

After you remove everything from the both trailing arms, you have to do some precision fabrication. You will have to beat on the center of the wagon’s trailing arm where the hub bolt goes through because the wagon’s trailing arm is spaced wider apart then the Integra’s. So just keep beating it till it fits just right. Then you will have to grind the rear corner of the wagon’s trailing arm so the caliper can fit. The picture here is about as detailed as I can show you. Just do everything in small sections. You will also have to heat up and bend the parking brake cable bracket in a vise or something like that in order for it to fit. Plus you will have to beat on the trailing arm some more on the top to bend in the metal for it to fit also. This is why I don’t recommend this conversion to anyone.

Modified wagon trailing arms Parking brake cable

In order for the hub to fit on the wagon’s trailing arm you will have to drill some of the holes out a little bit also. As for the energy suspension trailing arm bushings... I don’t think I will detail that because I think the trailing arm bushings they make are sorry and seem a bit mickey mouse to me. It seems like the bushing were a bitch to get in but have no problem coming out if you take a corner hard. The sway bar was also hard to get in there. I actually don’t remember how I did it. I remember heating it up and dropping like a 200 pound log on it to bend it so it would clear my exhaust. Since my exhaust is different from the factory it might not be so difficult but it is nice having that rear swaybar. Since my master cylinder was already bad I upgraded to a 1990 Honda Civic EX master cylinder. The EX is a 15/16 and the wagon is a 13/16. Some people report no difference in feel on braking but if you want to buy a new one might as well buy the bigger one. The Integra master cylinder has a different bolt pattern then the Civic’s. I also got a 1991 Prelude proportioning valve. It’s difficult getting all the lines to thread in because of small differences but it can be done. Just be very careful not to strip the connectors when doing this. After you connect the brake lines you can bleed them and test them out. After all this is done I would have to say I do like the rear disc brakes a lot better then drums.

But I couldn’t have done it by myself. Shaun, the person who does this webpage for me, also helped me in the disassembly process. I put the car on the jack stands and he just went to work out of nowhere. Maybe he feels compelled to help me because I turned his 91 Corolla into a 4 door Celica GTS practically. He has a web page for his car to but it’s still a Corolla. Just goes to show you anyone will make a web page for a car no matter how shitty their car is Yeah like a Honda wagon!. Scottie’s just pissed because the Celica parts bolted up pretty easily to my car after we found out what we were doing. Ha ha, my rotors are fucking bigger than yours just like my nuts! ‘Fucking Toyota’ my ass! You don’t want to say ‘fucking Honda’ but you know it deserves it! Ahhhh... I get to talk so much shit cuz I make the page.

I was lucky enough to have my cat help me. He got a little greasy. Also my wife was kind enough to keep me cheered up when everything went so wrong. Here’s a picture of her feet. And an every once in awhile a hang loose is necessary.

Peace Fox Rianne's feet Gang sign

So what does a freak who’s willing to go through this much trouble to modify his wagon look like? Yes, you have to have greasy hair and have a craziness gene in you. I’m not the only one though. If you’re looking at this web page then you too must be crazy. Your finished project should look something like this.

Some lunatic Finished

Peace,

Scottie

Camber Correction

You can put some washers between the body and the rear upper control arm mounts in order to push the upper control arms out and reduce some negative camber.
