No Surf Report - Aug 28, 2003 -

Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself, couldn't surf today, bla - bla -waaaa - waaaaa

I think back a few years (actually a lot of years) and remind myself of how lucky I am today, and how great my life has been so far -

Besides all the really cool stuff about helping to raise kids, marriage, and more and more, I was able to grow up in La Jolla, graduate from La Jolla Jr-Sr High School in 1962, and be a marginally competent participant in the roaring sixties.

The following note was sent to me by Maynard orThe Rat, or maybe by their buddy Ollie, and I'm stoked when something...

...I've put on the web, elicits this type of reaction:

"Where did you find the shot of the Hells Angels parked in front of Maynards???"

"That picture brought back the following memory:

When I lived in the garage across the street from WindanSea, behind Dick Clarks house, I also worked for WindanSea Surfboards selling boards in Mission Beach.

Every Sunday after the Hells Angels had breakfast at Maynards they would come down to Mission Beach and park in the alley across the street from the shop..

I would go grab my beach chair and get ready for the show. Across the street from the shop was a Gay bar, mostly women. The Angels would send their Chicks into the Bar. By then I had my beach chair located in the doorway of the shop ready to view the show. Usually in about 5 minutes out would come a couple of Angel chicks followed by a few dikes.

Now the fun begins, all hell brakes loose on the sidewalk, biker Chicks and Dikes going at it. With the Angel Guys standing by laughing and yelling, what a show.. Usually took 10 minutes before SDPD showed up.

Then things really got funny, Biker Chicks into one paddy wagon, Dikes into another... This went on almost every Sunday for the three months I worked there..

It got to be so regular that the SDPD started having the paddy wagons pre-positon in the alley on my side of Mission Blvd., they would call that a quick reaction force today I guess.....

Thanks for putting up that picture and bring back a memory that I had not thought of for many years...."

Well, Maynard or The Rat or maybe even Ollie - Thank you!

Later,

BA

Another opinion of why NOT to surf in La Jolla -

Cribbed and snipped from a Dan King Essay:

"...The waves are inevitably crappy closeouts. The wind is always onshore. In addition there are serious access problems...

...If you do find a spot to park, you will end up paying for it, and most likely your car will get broken into and/or ripped off while you are out in the surf..."

Hey BA - Happy Birthday  By the way did you get your driver's license yet - I wrote this - That's why it sucks! New - Aug. 20, 2003

Bonzer's First Wetsuit - I did NOT write this - That's why it's good!!  Aug. 17, 2003

Oops Forgot Some Stuff:

Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.

I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
