Surf Report - Aug 23, 2003 -

Met John Singer this morning in front of his Big Shot Hotel - in LA JOLLA -

John is one of my cyber-surfing buds from the Bay Area

John left a message on my machine last night something like this: "Hey BA, I'm in La Jolla, and since I am in town, the south swell will hit!"

Pretty heady boasting - but I'M used to the boasting from all of the Bay Area Alt Dot Surfers -JUST KIDDING!!

We surf-checked Green Rocks Central and Green Rocks North and South

Tide was too low and the swell was pretty crossed-up.

We checked out LP - only two surfers out, but the tide was coming in, and the wave size was increasing - soon, the 2 would turn into 20 -

Twenty surfers of varying skill levels at LP is not a whole lotta fun, so we went to Wind**Sea.

Surf was okay - and getting bigger.

I introduced John to the group of hostile locals on the outside, and to my suprise, David Nava gave Singer a Wind**Sea Day Pass - at least one that would remain valid for a few hours.

Nava caught a pretty good wave, and I got the photo -

Didn't snap any photos of Singer - Surfing, but he did snag a couple of good waves.

On a more artistic side - I thought the two below photos were pretty cool -

Same guy in the photos - and a pretty decent surfer

The take-off photo by surfshot is pretty cool - kinda low tide and setting-up a bit.

The other photo - I took - Team Fuji Disposable and tried to get a decent photo -

The tide has come in quite a bit, so the wave flattened out between the outside and Rat Land.

In this photo he looks like he barely knows how to tweak his nose and ride the wave.

From Surf Star to Tourmaline Beginner - it's all about the timing!

Another opinion of why NOT to surf in La Jolla -

Cribbed and snipped from a Dan King Essay:

"...The waves are inevitably crappy closeouts. The wind is always onshore. In addition there are serious access problems...

...If you do find a spot to park, you will end up paying for it, and most likely your car will get broken into and/or ripped off while you are out in the surf..."

Hey BA - Happy Birthday  By the way did you get your driver's license yet - I wrote this - That's why it sucks! New - Aug. 20, 2003

Bonzer's First Wetsuit - I did NOT write this - That's why it's good!!  Aug. 17, 2003

Oops Forgot Some Stuff:

Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.

I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
