Obedience

With some basic obedience training you will develop a better relationship with your dog and will prevent tragedy. Although training is an ongoing process it doesn't have to be formal and should be integrated in your daily routine (ex.: have your airedale in a down/stay while preparing his meal, have your airedale heeling at your side when moving from one room to the other, etc.).

Some of us enjoy competing in obedience trials held by the Canadian Kennel Club accredited Clubs and Associations. This sport shows how a well-trained dog can behave in public, and around other dogs and, depending on the class, perform different exercise in the same manner and in the same sequence.

There are 3 classes:

Novice-CD title: heeling and figure 8 dog on leash, stand for examination with dog on leash, heeling off leash, recall, and group sit and down with handlers in the ring.

Open-CDX title: heeling and figure 8 off leash, drop on recall, retrieve a dumbbell on flat, retrieve over high jump, jump over broad jump, and group sit and down with handlers out of sight.

Utility-U.D. title: seek back a dark glove, scent discrimination 2 articles(see photo left), signals, moving stand & examination, send away and directed jumping.

Come and see some Airedales in Action in Obedience, Agility and in the show ring August 2-5 at the Shouldice Park in Calgary.
