MOUNT ARLINGTON – The borough’s former Town Crier will soon be the nation’s, at least for the national birthday celebration in July.

After admitting that he first had to get his feet back on the ground and his head out of the clouds, Bill Joseph is getting ready for the “cry” of his career.

He has been officially asked by the National Archives and Information Center, a federal government agency, to serve as “town crier” when the Declaration of Independence is “performed” live in the nation’s capital during the July 4 weekend.

Officially named borough town crier by former Mayor Dolores Rivinius in 1992, Joseph served in the post for 10 years, making public announcements at borough ceremonies for a decade.

Then, he was named the “official” crier in both Morris and Sussex counties.

A borough resident for the past 28 years, Joseph works for Morris County delivering meals for the “Meals on Wheels” program.

In 2001, he became the official town crier in Belvidere and soon, he’ll become town crier for the Somerset County Parks Commission. He recently hosted a “town crier” convention in Newton.

Wearing his officially realistic Revolutionary War uniform, Joseph said his job as “crier” is mainly to draw attention, attract the public and publicly announce a grand event, using a bell and what he described as his loud voice.

He “cries” about one event per month.

After Lunch at Pete's Cafe we went to the SOuth Lawn of City HAll where the Competition continued.


The Town Criers got to meet our host the Honorable Jan Perry.

Then the compeition began:


we then took the evening off and the next day saw the last portion of the town Crier compeition at the Edednale Library along with the childrens compeition.

There was a workshop in which the kids learned the art of town crying and then they all competed.

the Winner of the First ever Los Angeles Town crier Cup Competition was the Town Crier From MArkham Ontario Canada.


The children had a winner , but they all won.

I think not many of us know about Councilmember Dennis Zine and his newsletters. The Zine LINE and then his superman symbol with the letter Z in it instead of the big S.

I spoke about Towm LAbonge having a CalendarCalendar he does every year.

But Dennis Zine Takes the Cake. He even has his own award for publc servants called the Z awards.

Town Criers/ better late than never PArt I
Since Eric Garcetti has decided to link this Town Crier blog on his blog , it might be time to start the Town Crier Blog up again.

Well, the First ever Los ANgeles Town Crier Compeition in Los ANgeles happened the first weeekend of june. The 3rd and the 4th .

HEre is my friend Lesley Taplin at the airport with the Town Crier From MArkham, Ontario, we picked him up on the 1st of June. HE and his wife MAry Webster were able to make the rounds of the press on the 2nd.

He even annunced the compeition at the hope for firefighters on hope street.

what was so amzing was with only 6 town criers at this event there was so much press coverage. LA Times , NPR , KQED Public Radio , and the Downtown News.

The criers began arriving on Thursday evening and we had a meeting after dinner to discuss the order of the criers. In other word who would go first at each part of the competitition.

Friday Morning saw us at City hall for resolutions form the City of Los Angeles


then at 11:15 th games began , actually we were a little late I had misplaced a couple of cries. I got those and eric ran home and helped with this also. God bless Eric Richardson.

It started on Olvera street.

After the ist part of the Compeition on Olvera Street we went to Luch at PEte's Cafe. Tom Gimore was our host and provided us with great meals.
