Ancient Egypt

From as far back as I can remember, I have been deeply enticed by the culture, life, and myths of ancient Egypt. Though I have never visited the country, I have read much on the practices of yesteryears within their community. The great sphinx, the various tombs and monuments, the history of the animal-like Gods has always fascinated me to no end. I have made it a goal to visit the country and see the sights I have read so much about. Inshallah, one day I shall do just that :o)

Does the idea of mummification disgust you? Is it hard to comprehend why people would do so much to keep the body of a loved one preserved in the manner of the ancient Egyptians? Why did the Egyptians put prized possessions in the tombs of the deceased? As a child, these questions irked me and I wanted to know more. As I continued to read on the traditions and practices of this ancient culture, I grew to appreciate the delicate bond between life and death that they so lovingly cherished. To actually fully understand the painstaking process of some of their traditions will enable anyone to gain a new respect for the culture. One particular chapter of the many sagas of Egyptian culture that interested me was the story of King Tutankhamen. The story of how he reigned as the youngest pharaoh, how he died, and the curse that surrounded his tomb is one that anyone with interest in Ancient Egypt is bound to know. The discovery of his tomb by scientists is one of the most interesting discoveries ever. I have included a link from National Geographic below that contains exquisite graphics and tells the tale of the discovery in great detail. The unraveling of the mummies of his two little daughters and all the riches left in his tomb is enough to envoke anyone's interest. If you do have any interest in Egyptology then don't refrain from clicking any of the links below to learn more on this fascinating culture.

Learn about ancient Egypt...

Hmm....where do we start? Egypt's culture and rituals of the ancient world are so intricate and vast that it's hard to know where to begin learning. Some sites that I used for research or merely for browsing include...

Anubis....
Anubis, in Egyptian mythology, god of the dead. He was considered the inventor of embalming, the guardian of tombs, and a judge of the dead. The Egyptians believed that at the judgment he weighed the heart of the dead against the feather of truth. This jackal represents the character he was believed to identify with. In most graphic representations, Anubis is seen as jackal-headed.
