Shoepillow, the once great, have now broken up. I am sorry to be the bringer of bad news if you have not heard yet. Fortunately, I Have Rights did manage to get this interview before the break up. Still available are the full length album and the 7", "Everything For a Reason". I would highly recomend the 7" to anyone with ears, however as I say this I am torn apart because I have a deep love for the full length. Nevertheless, Shoepillow, as in Remember to Forget Me's "Let's Rock!" do indeed rock.
Interview by Jonathan Strong
Influences?
Nate: thousands and thousands of bands...I知 not even going to begin naming any...except weezer. They are fabulous.
In the song "Remember to Forget Me" the chorus is "you / you hurt my feelings / you made me cry". I Have Rights readers want to know if you, Nate, really did cry.
Nate- yep, cried for a good while too.
Describe why you chose to express yourself through emo as opposed to other types of music, or poetry etc.
Nate: well...I do express myself through other types of music I知 in a band called the Exam which is like sick screamy stuff with crazy guitars, that's my band for venting anger, shoepillow is how I talk to people about problems. For example in "remember to forget me" rather than tell that girl that she hurt me and that I was sick of her crap, I just made a song out of it and hoped she'd find out that way. I guess to make a long answer short. I choose this way to express myself because I'm a wuss at confrontations.
What is the relationship between Shoepillow and your record label, Can't Spell Recordz?
Nate: I知 very good friends with the owner. Basically he started the label because he wanted to release the cd. And since then has done the 7" and I think right now he's working on releasing this other band...I forget their name.
Give some current info on the status of the tour video. Is it out yet? How long? Etc.
Nate: tour video is not out yet. It値l be out whenever we stop being lazy.
When can we expect a new release from Shoepillow?
Nate: I壇 say next year probably in April? June?
In the 7", Everything for a reason, the moods seemed to shift a bit towards an angry edge. Was this a conscious effort or did it just come out that way? Do you agree with the statement that some of the riffs and chord progressions seem a bit angrier in the 7" than the full length?
Nate: ummm...yeah I値l agree to that. And it really wasn't conscious effort, it was just what I happened to write.
Is there a shoepillow tour coming soon?
Nate: we should be going on the road again in April.
What is something interesting that happened to you this week?
Nate: no I live a pretty boring life.
